Stephan Witasek (1870-1915) was an Austrian philosopher noted for his contribution to the development of the Graz School. He is cited as the most talented psychologist of the school and was groomed as Alexius Meinong's successor. [1] Witasek is noted for developing a theory of aesthetics within the Graz School's abstract object theory. [2]

Biography

Witasek was born on May 17, 1870, in Vienna, Austria to Wenzel Johann Witasek and his wife Emilie née Egery. [3] His father was a chief railway inspector while his mother, the second wife of Wenzel, was a daughter of a Hungarian civil servant. [3] Witasek was the eldest of their two sons. [3] When his father retired, the family moved to Graz. [4] He obtained a degree in philosophy at the University of Graz after completing his study on complexion theory. [4]

Witasek became a scholar, a career, which Rudolf Ameseder described as a meager life marked by hard work, poverty, and belated recognition. [5] Although, he was known for serving as Meinong's private assistant for a decade on Austria's first psychological laboratory, Witasek would be credited for directing the facility's development only after his death. [5]

Witasek married Alice Makowiczka in 1903 and they had two children, Alice and Georg. [4] He died in 1915 and this contributed to the disintegration of the Graz School. [6]

Works

Witasek is considered one of the most important representatives of the psychology of aesthetics alongside Theodor Lipps and Johannes Volkelt. [7] His earliest works involved an investigation of the theoretical foundation for aesthetics. This was based on Gustav Fechner's studies, which challenged the idealistic and value-based approaches in aesthetics that prevailed then. [7] Building on Meinong's work, Witasek developed his own psychological aesthetics, where aesthetic properties are considered ideal and extra-objective. [8] This model links the aesthetic object to the subject's mental state. [8] He also contributed to Meinong's work on complexion theory, particularly in the systematic knowledge of complexions. His investigation of Christian von Ehrenfels' instances of Gestaltqualitaten detailed how a polyphonic composition constitute the different "voices", which are considered complexions. [9]

One of the notable theories that Witasek pushed forward was his claim that pre-existing sensational elements create psychological products in the form of different perceptual configurations. [10] He explored this idea further in collaboration with the Austrian-Italian psychologist, Vittorio Benussi, and the Austrian philosopher and psychologist, Alois Höfler. [10] They were able to explain the process of generating perceptual configurations from the same sensory elements. [10]

The School of Brentano was a group of philosophers and psychologists who studied with Franz Brentano and were essentially influenced by him. While it was never a school in the traditional sense, Brentano tried to maintain some cohesion in the school. However, two of his most famous students, Alexius Meinong and Edmund Husserl, ultimately moved radically beyond his theories.

The Graz School, also Meinong's School, of experimental psychology and object theory was headed by Alexius Meinong, who was professor and Chair of Philosophy at the University of Graz where he founded the Graz Psychological Institute in 1894. The Graz School's phenomenological psychology and philosophical semantics achieved important advances in philosophy and psychological science.

Otto Selz was a German psychologist from Munich, Bavaria, who formulated the first non-associationist theory of thinking, in 1913. Influenced by the German phenomenological tradition, Selz used the method of introspection, but unlike his predecessors, his theory developed without the use of images and associations. Wilhelm Wundt used the method of introspection in the 1880s, but thought that higher-level mental processes could not be studied in the scientific laboratory.

Karl Duncker was a German Gestalt psychologist. He attended Friedrich-Wilhelms-University from 1923 to 1923, and spent 1925–1926 at Clark University in Worcester, MA as a visiting professor, where he received a master's degree in arts degree. Until 1935 he was a student and assistant of the founders of Gestalt psychology in Berlin: Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka. In 1935, exiled by the Nazis, he got an assistantship in Cambridge with Frederic Charles Bartlett and later immigrated to the US, where he was again an assistant of Wolfgang Köhler's at Swarthmore College. Duncker committed suicide in 1940 at 37 years of age. He suffered from depression for some time and had received professional treatment.

Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint is an 1874 book by the Austrian philosopher Franz Brentano, in which the author argues that the goal of psychology should be to establish exact laws. Brentano's best known book, it established his reputation as a philosopher, helped to establish psychology as a scientific discipline, and influenced Husserlian phenomenology, analytic philosophy, gestalt psychology, and the philosopher Alexius Meinong's theory of objects. It has been called Brentano's best known works, and it has been compared to the physician Wilhelm Wundt's Grundzüge der physiologischen Psychologie and the Project for a Scientific Psychology of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis.

Experimental aesthetics is a field of psychology founded by Gustav Theodor Fechner in the 19th century. According to Fechner, aesthetics is an experiential perception which is empirically comprehensible in light of the characteristics of the subject undergoing the experience and those of the object. Experimental aesthetics is the second oldest research area in psychology, psychophysics being the only field which is older. In his central work Introduction to Aesthetics Fechner describes his empirical approach extensively and in detail. Experimental aesthetics is characterized by a subject-based, inductive approach.

Steno Tedeschi (1881–1911) was an Italian intellectual and academic. His works were associated with the ideas of the Graz School and he is noted for contributing to its object theory and Stephan Witasek's aesthetics. Tedeschi was Italo Svevo's cousin.
