York University is a private college affiliated with the Churches of Christ and located in York, Nebraska. It was founded in 1890.
York University was founded in 1890 by the United Brethren Church as York College. In 1946, the merger of the United Brethren Church and the Evangelical Church (see Evangelical Association) transferred control of the school to the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1956 the church transferred control to members of the Churches of Christ. The university has more than 7,500 alumni. Average enrollment is around 650 students. [1] [2]
In 2021, it was announced that York College would become York University. On July 1, 2022, York College officially became York University. [3] [4]
The university's campus is situated on fifty acres of land and includes seventeen major buildings.
The university provides both residential, traditional undergraduate education and online, non-traditional programs. Baccalaureate degrees offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Science. [5] York University also offers the Master of Arts through York University Online. [6]
York University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The institution's teacher education program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). [7]
York's student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. On-campus student enrollment is typically around 450 in the fall semester with a typical class size of 22. About 200 students are enrolled in the university's online program. The on-campus student population includes students from 30 states and 10 countries.
The York athletic teams are called the Panthers. The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference since the 2016–17 academic year. [8] They were also a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), primarily competing as an independent in the Central Region of the Division I level. The Eagles previously competed in the defunct Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) from 1994–95 to 2014–15 (when the conference dissolved); [8] as well as an NAIA Independent within the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) during the 2015–16 school year.
York competes in 20 intercollegiate varsity sports: Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, track & field (indoor and outdoor) and wrestling; while women's sports include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track & field (indoor and outdoor), volleyball and wrestling; and co-ed sports include cheerleading, dance and eSports. Trinity International University (TIU) is an evangelical Christian university headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois. It comprises Trinity College, Trinity Graduate School, a theological seminary, a law school, and a camp called Timber-lee. The university also maintains campuses in North Lauderdale, Florida & Miami, Florida; the camp is located in East Troy, Wisconsin. TIU is the only university affiliated with Evangelical Free Church of America in the United States and enrolls about 2,700 students. On February 17, 2023, TIU announced it was moving the undergraduate program to online modalities only and closed the residential campus at the end of the Spring 2023 semester.
Ottawa University (OU) is a private Baptist university with its main campus in Ottawa, Kansas. It also has a second residential campus in Surprise, Arizona, and adult campuses in the Kansas City, Phoenix and Milwaukee metropolitan areas. It was founded in 1865 and is affiliated with the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and the American Baptist Churches USA. The residential campus in Ottawa has a student enrollment of more than 850 students, while the OUAZ campus in Surprise boasts more than 900. In total, Ottawa University serves more than 4,000 students across all of its campuses and online.
Waldorf University is a private for-profit university in Forest City, Iowa. It was founded in 1903 and associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its predecessors. In 2010, it was sold to Columbia Southern University and became a for-profit institution; 12 years later, ownership was transferred to the Waldorf Lutheran College Foundation.
Dakota State University (DSU) is a public university in Madison, South Dakota. The school was founded in 1881 as a normal school, or teacher training school. Education is still the university's heritage mission, but a signature mission of technology was added by the state legislature in 1984 to specialize in "programs in computer management, computer information systems, and other related undergraduate and graduate programs."
