Zemo Nikozi is a village in the Shida Kartli region of central Georgia near the Russian and south Ossetian military forces' check-point. It is the birthplace of Patriarch Kyrion II of Georgia. Nikozi is One of Georgia's oldest villages and home to early Christian churches and historical monuments. Nikozi is selected for the 5th Animation International Film Festival September. 2015. [1] The annual Nikozi International Animated Film Festival will be held at the Episcopal Palace of the Nikozi Monastery. The Palace was completely destroyed in the 2008 August war however the festival has given the area new life and become a cultural centre for the town's youth. [2] There is Nikozi Art School in the city.

Kartli had no strictly defined boundaries and they significantly fluctuated in the course of history. Kaspi is a town in central Georgia on the Mtkvari River. It is a center of Kaspi district, one of the four districts in Shida Kartli region. Founded in the early Middle Ages, the town turned into possession of the Amilakhvari noble family in the 15th century. Kaspi officially acquired a town's status in 1959 and, as of 2014, had the population of 13,423.

Dvaleti was a historical and ethnographic region in medieval Georgia. Territory in the central part of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, between Mamison Pass and Darial Gorge was associated with Dvaleti. According to Vakhusthi Bagrationi territory of Dvaleti included several gorges, namely: Kasris-Kkhevi, Zramaga, Zhghele, Nara Gorge, Zrogo, and Zakha. Some authors also mentioned Trusso Gorge and Magrandvaleti as being part of Dvaleti, while others disagree. Dvaleti was integral part of the Georgian Kingdoms since IV centuries - III centuries BC. After the Russian annexation of the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti, in 1859 Dvaleti was excluded from the Tiflis Governorate and incorporated into the Terek Oblast. On modern maps historical region Dvaleti can be found in the south of North Ossetia–Alania, Russian Federation.

Gori is a district of Georgia, in the region of Shida Kartli. After abolishment of former South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast, the Gori District included the territory of former Tskhinvali District. Some northern territories of the district are part of a self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia and have not been under control of the Georgian government since 1992. It is bordered by the municipalities of Kaspi to the east, Borjomi and Tsalka to the south, and Kareli to the west. The area of Gori municipality is 1352 km2 and the population is 125,692 people. The administrative center of the municipality is the city of Gori.

The Tbeli were the great feudal family in the ninth and tenth century Georgia. The family name derives from their domain of Tbeti, currently located in Shida Kartli.

The Eredvi basilica of Saint George is an early 10th-century Georgian Orthodox church in the village of Eredvi in the Shida Kartli region, currently in the disputed territory of South Ossetia. It was constructed by the architect Tevdore Taplaisdze, who laid foundation of the church in 906 as related in a Georgian inscription on the building. The church is a three-nave basilica, which, despite later reconstructions, has largely preserved its original architectural features. The church is inscribed on the list of the Immovable Cultural Monuments of National Significance of Georgia. After the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, the Georgians lost access to the church and services there were restricted by the South Ossetian authorities.

The Urbnisi cathedral of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, commonly known as the Sioni church of Urbnisi, is a Georgian Orthodox cathedral at the village of Urbnisi in Georgia's east-central Shida Kartli region. The church is a relatively large three-nave basilica, originally built in the 6th century and reconstructed in the 10th and 17th centuries. The church walls bear several inscriptions, some being among the oldest executed in the Georgian alphabet. The cathedral is inscribed on the list of Georgia's Immovable Cultural Monuments of National Significance.
