The 2016 Kansas Jayhawks football team represented the University of Kansas in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Jayhawks were led by second year head coach David Beaty. They played home games at Memorial Stadium and were members of the Big 12 Conference.

The Jayhawks entered the season with a 15-game losing streak overall, which ended with a 55–6 win over Rhode Island, [1] They also entered the season with 12 consecutive losses within the Big 12, which expanded to 19 during the season and ended with their 24–21 win over Texas. The win over Texas was Kansas's first win over Texas since 1938. [2] The Jayhawks also entered the season with a 35-game road losing streak dating back to a 34–7 win against UTEP during the 2009 season, which was expanded to 40 losses during the season. The Jayhawks were picked 10th in the Big 12's preseason poll, receiving 25 of the possible 26 last place votes. [3]

The Jayhawks returned senior safety Anthony "Fish" Smithson who led the nation in solo tackles. [4]

The Jayhawks finished the season 2–10, 1–8 in Big 12 play to finish in last place.

Billy Eugene Self Jr. is an American basketball coach. He is the head men's basketball coach at the University of Kansas, a position he has held since 2003. During his 20 seasons as head coach, he has led the Jayhawks to 17 Big 12 regular season championships, including an NCAA record 14 consecutive Big 12 regular season championships, some of which were shared (2005–2018). He has also led the Jayhawks to three NCAA Final Four appearances, the 2008 NCAA championship and 2022 NCAA championship. Self was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. At the end of the 2021–22 season, Self had the 18th most wins among Division I coaches in NCAA history and 4th among active head coaches. He is the second-winningest coach in Kansas history, behind only Hall of Famer Phog Allen and is the only coach in Kansas history to lead Kansas to multiple NCAA Tournament National Championships.

The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball program is the intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Kansas. The program is classified in the NCAA's Division I and the team competes in the Big 12 Conference. Kansas is considered one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country with six overall national championships, as well being runner-up six times and having the most conference titles in the nation. The Jayhawks also own the NCAA record for most consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances with 28 consecutive appearances. They were also, along with Dartmouth, the first team to appear in multiple NCAA Tournaments after making their second appearance in the 1942 tournament. It was the 134th season of play in program history. Led by third-year head coach Lance Leipold, Kansas finished the season 9–4 overall and 5–4 in conference play, placing seventh in the Big 12. The Jayhawks defeated UNLV in the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl for the program's first bowl game victory in 15 years. The team played home games at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.
