Coaching changes

On November 26, 2023, offensive coordinator Clint Trickett was fired by the Thundering Herd after serving two seasons in the position. [1] On December 5, 2023, the Thundering herd hired Seth Doege to be their offensive coordinator. He was previously the tight ends coach at Purdue. [2]

After playing college football for Texas Tech University, he was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2013. On February 27, 2014, he was signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Doege was Texas Tech's starting quarterback for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) is a conference of 14 universities which participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. As of the 2022 season, all 14 full members play football in the conference. Although the SBC was formed in 1976, it did not sponsor football until 2001.

The Thundering Herd, led by first-year head coach Kim Caldwell, were playing their home games at Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 26–7, 17–1 in Sun Belt play to finish in first place. In the Sun Belt tournament, they defeated Appalachian State, Old Dominion, and James Madison to become champions. They received the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where, as a No. 13 seed, they lost to No. 4 seed Virginia Tech in the first round.
