The Workers' Party is a major centre-left political party in Singapore and one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the governing People's Action Party (PAP) and the opposition Progress Singapore Party (PSP). It is currently the largest and oldest opposition party in Parliament, having contested every parliamentary election since 1959 against the dominant PAP. The WP is the only political party other than the PAP with elected Members of Parliament (MPs) since the 1991 general election.
Hougang or Aukang is a planning area and mature residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. The town is the most populous in the region, being home to 247,528 residents as of 2018. Hougang planning area is bordered by Sengkang to the north, Geylang and Serangoon to the south, Bedok to the southeast, Toa Payoh to the southwest, Paya Lebar to the east, Ang Mo Kio to the west and Bishan to the southwest.

Low Thia Khiang is a Singaporean former politician. A member of the Workers' Party (WP), Low was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament between 1997 and 2011 and served as Secretary-General of the WP between 2001 and 2018. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC between 1991 and 2011, and also Aljunied GRC representing Bedok Reservoir — Punggol division between 2011 and 2020.
The Hougang Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. It is managed by Aljunied-Hougang Town Council. The current Member of Parliament is Dennis Tan Lip Fong of the Workers' Party (WP).
The Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) located in the central, eastern and north-eastern areas of Singapore. The constituency consists of a section of Bedok, Chai Chee, Geylang, Kaki Bukit, Kallang, Kembangan, Marine Parade, Mountbatten, Ubi, Serangoon and Hougang. There are a total of 5 divisions in this GRC: Marine Parade, Geylang Serai, Braddell Heights, Joo Chiat and Kembangan-Chai Chee managed by Marine Parade Town Council. The current MPs are Seah Kian Peng, Mohd Fahmi Aliman, Edwin Tong, and Tan See Leng from the People's Action Party (PAP).
Cynthia Phua Siok Gek is a Singaporean business executive and former politician. She was a Member of Parliament of Aljunied GRC for the Paya Lebar Ward from 25 October 2001 to 19 April 2011.
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day. This election also marked the first and the only three-cornered fight since 2001 in Punggol East SMC before it increased to four-cornered fight on a by-election held two years later.

It was managed by Pasir Ris–Punggol Town Council in 2011, Aljuined–Hougang–Punggol East Town Council in 2013 and again by Pasir Ris–Punggol Town Council in 2015. Following the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review committee report for the 2020 general elections, Punggol East SMC was merged into the 4-member Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
Gerald Giam Yean Song is a Singaporean politician. A member of the opposition Workers' Party (WP), Giam was previously the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament between 2011 and 2015 of the 12th Parliament of Singapore. Giam has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Bedok Reservoir–Punggol division of Aljunied GRC since 2020 and was elected as Policy Research Team Head of the Workers' Party Central Executive Committee (CEC) in 2022.
Muhamad Faisal bin Abdul Manap is a Singaporean politician. A member of the opposition Workers' Party (WP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Kaki Bukit division of Aljunied GRC since 2011 and has been serving as Vice-Chairman of the WP since 2016.

Leon Perera is a former Singaporean politician. A former member of the opposition Workers' Party (WP), he was previously a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament between 2015 and 2020. Perera was the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Serangoon division of Aljunied GRC between 2020 and 2023. Perera resigned from the Workers' Party and as Member of Parliament on 19 July 2023 while Nicole Seah resigned from the Workers' Party on 18 July 2023 due to their extramarital affair.
The Sengkang Group Representation Constituency is a four-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern region of Singapore. It consists of Punggol East SMC, Sengkang West SMC and what was previously the Sengkang Central ward of the Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC. Sengkang GRC consists of four divisions: Anchorvale, Rivervale, Buangkok, and Compassvale managed by Sengkang Town Council. The current Members of Parliament are He Ting Ru, Jamus Lim and Louis Chua from the Workers' Party (WP).

General elections are due to be held in Singapore no later than 23 November 2025 to determine the composition of the fifteenth Parliament. The elections will be the nineteenth in Singapore since 1948 and the fourteenth since independence.
