The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), previously named the American Academy of Physician Assistants, is a professional association for physician assistants (PAs) in the United States. [2] It is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.

History

The Duke University Physician Assistant Program was established in 1965 as the first formalized PA program in the United States and graduated its inaugural class in October 1967. In April 1968, the recent graduates of the Duke PA program, along with current students, began organizing a professional organization, incorporating the American Association of Physician's Assistants in North Carolina on May 20, 1968. Within three years, the organization expanded its membership beyond the local community and elected leadership representing various regions across the nation. [3] [4] [5] [6] :6 In 1971, the organization adopted the name "American Academy of Physician Assistants" [6] :6 and published its first official journal, Physician's Associate. [6] :32

The Yale Physician Associate program accepted its first class in 1971. The program's founder, Dr. Alfred M. Sadler Jr., served as its first director in 1970. Yale School of Medicine maintains the only PA program named "Physician Associate" program instead of a "Physician Assistant" program in the United States, as it pre-dates the formation of the accreditation body and has elected to retain its original name. Note that despite the difference in name, graduates of the program will take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam and will be called a physician assistant when practicing.

Certified anesthesiologist assistants (CAAs) are highly trained master’s degree level non-physician anesthesia care providers. CAAs are integral members of the anesthesia care team as described by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). This designation must be disambiguated from the Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant (CCAA) designation conferred by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists. All CAAs possess a baccalaureate degree, and complete an intensive didactic and clinical program at a postgraduate level. CAAs are trained in the delivery and maintenance of all types of anesthesia care as well as advanced patient monitoring techniques. The goal of CAA education is to guide the transformation of student applicants into competent clinicians.
