Apollo Nelson Makubuya is a Ugandan corporate lawyer and author, who serves as the chairperson of the board of directors at Equity Bank Uganda Limited, one of Uganda's commercial banks. [1] He was appointed to that position in March 2017. [2]

Early life and education

Makubuya was born in Uganda in the 1960s. After attending local primary and secondary schools, he was admitted to Makerere University Law School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He went on to obtain a Diploma in Legal Practice, from the Law Development Centre, in Kampala, Uganda's capital city. He was then admitted to the Uganda Bar, as a practicing attorney. Later, he obtained a Master of Laws degree, from the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. [3]

Career

Apollo Makubuya is a partner at MMAKS Advocates, an upscale legal firm based in Kampala, Uganda. He is a member of the Corporate Advisory team at the firm and serves a Co-Managing Partner at MMAKS Advocates. [3]

He has extensive experience in the field of international human rights law. Makubuya advises banks, mining companies, regional and international investors on corporate, commercial law and tax issues. [3]

Before going into private practice, he was a legal advisor at a private bank. He also served as the assistant head of the financial sector adjustment credit (FSAC) division of the Bank of Uganda, the country's central bank. He also has served as a consultant on human rights, development and corporate law issues with the Uganda Human Rights Commission, DANIDA and UNDP. [3]

Family

Apollo Makubuya was married to the late Stella Nansikombi Makubuya (11 November 1967 – 5 September 2018), a fellow lawyer and women's rights activist. Together, they are parents to three daughters (a) Athena Mulungi Nakku (b) Angela Kitiibwa Nakimuli and (c) Andrea Kwagalakwe Nabakka. [4] He is married to Anne Juuko, the chief executive officer of Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, since January 2022. [5] [6]

Other considerations

Apollo Makubuya concurrently serves as the Chief Palace Advisor to the Kabaka of Buganda, a constitutional monarch, currently Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. He was appointed to that position in February 2019, having previously served as Buganda's Third Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Attorney General [7] [8] [9]

Decolonization campaign

He is a known campaigner about decolonization of African heritage and on June 25, 2020, he presented the petition to the speaker of the Ugandan parliament signed by 5,200 people calling for the removal of symbols, street names, monuments and other colonial relics in Uganda that represent a nefarious legacy of colonial conquest, occupation, exploitation and impunity. Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II was Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda in Uganda from 22 November 1939 until his death. He was the thirty-fifth Kabaka of Buganda and the first president of Uganda from 1962-1966 when he was overthrown by Milton Obote. The foreign press often referred to him as King Freddie, a name rarely used in Uganda. An ardent defender of Buganda's interests, especially its traditional autonomy, he often threatened to make the kingdom independent both before and after Uganda's independence to preserve it. These firm convictions also later led to conflicts with his erstwhile political ally Milton Obote, who would eventually overthrow him.

Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited (SBU) is a commercial bank in Uganda and is licensed by the Bank of Uganda, the national banking regulator.

Kiddu Makubuya is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, and academic. He is the former minister for general duties in the office of the prime minister. He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011, replacing Janat Mukwaya who retired from elective politics. Before that, from 2005 until 2011, he served as Uganda's Attorney general. He resigned from cabinet on 16 February 2012 amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds. He is also the former member of parliament, representing Katikamu County South, Luweero District.

Godfrey Serunkuma Lule is a Ugandan lawyer. He was Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Uganda for Idi Amin and defected, becoming a prominent international critic of Amin. He went on to found the prominent Ugandan Law and Consulting firm Sebalu & Lule Advocates and Legal Consultants.

Peter James Nkambo Mugerwa was a prominent Ugandan lawyer. He served as Uganda's Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs under President Idi Amin from 1971 to 1973.

Al-Hajj Meddie Ssozi Kaggwa was a Ugandan lawyer, businessman, politician and corporate executive, who served as the Chairman of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, from May 2009 until his death on 20 November 2019.

Flavian Zeija is a Ugandan lawyer, academic and judge, on the High Court of Uganda, who doubles as the country's Principal Judge, effective 25 December 2019. In Uganda, a Principal Judge is responsible for supervising the justices of the High Court, including the assignment of duties to members of the Court. The Principal Judge is also responsible for supervising the Magistrates Courts below the High Court.

Barbara Kasekende is a Ugandan businesswoman and corporate executive who serves as the Head of the Advisory Department at Uganda Development Bank, the country's only indigenous, government-owned development financial institution. She took up this position in February 2022. Before that, she was the Corporate Social Investments Manager at Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, Uganda's largest commercial bank by assets.
