Barbara Madsen (born 1952) is an American jurist and a current Associate Justice of the Washington Supreme Court. She joined the court in 1993 as the first woman to be popularly elected to the Court in Washington state history. She was re-elected in 1998,2004,and 2010,and 2016. In her years on the Washington Supreme Court,Madsen has sat in judgement on thousands of cases. [1]
On November 5,2009,Barbara Madsen was unanimously elected by her peers to serve as Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court. [2] [3] She was sworn in as Chief Justice on January 11,2010,replacing retiring Chief Justice Gerry L. Alexander. [4] She served two terms as Chief Justice,the second longest serving in Washington state history.
Madsen is a native of Renton,Washington,and graduated from Hazen High School. In 1974,she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington. In 1977,she earned her Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law.
After completing law school,Madsen worked as a public defender in King County and Snohomish County. In 1982,she joined the Seattle City Attorney's Office and was appointed Special Prosecutor in 1984. Seattle Mayor Charles Royer appointed Madsen in 1988 to the Seattle Municipal Court bench. After serving as the Presiding Judge of the Seattle Municipal Court,she ran for the Washington Supreme Court in 1992 to fill the vacancy left by retiring Justice Fred H. Dore. [5]
In October 2018,Madsen concurred when the majority invalidated the state's death penalty. The court found its imposition to be racially biased and therefore in violation of the Constitution of Washington. [6] [7]
Barbara Joan Pariente is an attorney and jurist from Florida. She was chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court from July 1,2004,until June 30,2006. Pariente is the second woman to hold the position of chief justice and served on the court from 1997 to 2019. From 1993 to 1997 she was a judge on Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal.

Cynthia Baldwin is an American jurist who was a justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after serving sixteen years as a Pennsylvania County Court judge. Baldwin was the first African-American woman elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and the second African-American woman to serve on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. She retired from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 2008. After her retirement from the Court,she became a partner with Duane Morris and served as the first General Counsel for the Pennsylvania State University.
Robert French Utter was an American attorney and jurist from Washington. He served as a King County Superior Court judge from 1964 until his appointment to the Washington Court of Appeals in 1968. In 1971 he was appointed to the Washington Supreme Court,where he served for 23 years,including two years as the chief justice. Utter is known for his opposition to the death penalty. He dissented in two dozen cases on capital punishment while on the court and resigned in 1995 in protest of it. After resigning from the court,Utter taught the first state constitutional law course in Washington State at the University of Puget Sound School of Law and traveled around the world to help developing nations create independent judiciaries. He died in 2014.
