The hammerhead sharks are a group of sharks that form the family Sphyrnidae, so named for the unusual and distinctive structure of their heads, which are flattened and laterally extended into a "hammer" shape called a cephalofoil. Most hammerhead species are placed in the genus Sphyrna, while the winghead shark is placed in its own genus, Eusphyra. Many, but not necessarily mutually exclusive, functions have been postulated for the cephalofoil, including sensory reception, manoeuvering, and prey manipulation. The cephalofoil gives the shark superior binocular vision and depth perception.

The game was the first in the history of both franchises, as they both entered the Atlantic League at the same time. The LIU Post Pioneers were the athletic teams that represented the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, located in Brookville, New York, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports through the 2018–19 school year. The Pioneers most recently competed as members of the East Coast Conference for most sports; the football team was an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference. LIU Post had been a member of the ECC since 1989, when the league was established as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Island Federal Credit Union Arena, commonly known as Island Federal Arena, formerly known as the Stony Brook University Arena, is a 4,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Stony Brook, New York. It is the home of the Stony Brook Seawolves men's and women's basketball teams. Originally built in 1990, it underwent a $21.1 million renovation in 2012–14. Naming rights were sold to a regional credit union, Island Federal Credit Union. The Island Federal Arena has hosted the America East Conference Men's Basketball Tournament finals in 2012 and 2016, as well as the NBA G League Finals in 2019.

The LIU Sharks are the athletics teams representing Long Island University's (LIU) campuses in Brooklyn and Brookville, New York. The Sharks compete in NCAA Division I athletics and are members of the Northeast Conference. The LIU Sharks are the result of the July 1, 2019 unification of the athletic departments which had previously represented two separate campuses of LIU, the NCAA Division I LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds and the NCAA Division II LIU Post Pioneers.

They are led by 22nd year head coach Bryan Collins and play their home games at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. They play as a first–year member of the Northeast Conference. This is the first season that the LIU Sharks are competing as a team following the merger of the two LIU campuses' athletic departments in the summer of 2019.

The Sharks were led by third-year head coach Derek Kellogg, and played their home games at the Steinberg Wellness Center, with some home games at the Barclays Center, as members of the Northeast Conference (NEC).
The LIU Sharks women's ice hockey team represents Long Island University in NCAA Division I ice hockey competition as a member of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA). They play their home games at Islanders Iceworks in Syosset, New York and Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, New York.
The 2020 LIU Sharks football team represents both the LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn campuses of Long Island University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by 23rd year head coach Bryan Collins and play their home games at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. They play as a second–year member of the Northeast Conference. This was the final season as head coach for Collins as he stepped down in June.
The LIU Sharks men's ice hockey team represents Long Island University in NCAA Division I ice hockey. The school announced their intention to begin a varsity schedule for the 2020–21 season on April 30, 2020. While starting out as an independent, the Sharks are a scheduling partner of Atlantic Hockey for at least their first season.
The 2021 LIU Sharks football team will represents both the LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn campuses of Long Island University as a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC) in the 2021 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Sharks, led by interim head coach Jonathan Gill, play their home games at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
