William Eigel is an American politician and member of the Missouri State Senate. [1] [2] A member of the Republican Party, he was first elected in 2016 and assumed his seat on January 4, 2017. [1] Eigel is a former captain in the United States Air Force, having served from 2009 to 2016. [3] [4]
Eigel is a candidate in the 2024 Missouri gubernatorial election.
Eigel grew up in Dayton, Ohio and holds an MBA from Webster University. [5] He attended Purdue University from 1995-1999 and received a BS in industrial engineering. [6]
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Eigel called for a special session of the Missouri legislature to implement legislation to prevent private-sector companies from requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for staff and customers. [7]
In 2023, Eigel's BILL PAC was accused of using deceptive tactics to raise money for the 2024 Missouri gubernatorial election. Emails that prominently featured Donald Trump solicited small donations nationwide. [8] As of October 2023, almost 99% of donations to BILL PAC came from out of state. [9]
Eigel attracted wide attention for a video involving a flamethrower and burning cardboard boxes with references to book burning. He has also criticized current governor Mike Parson for calling for civility in politics. [10]
In 2024, Eigel and other Republicans opposed an amendment that would allow abortion in cases of rape or incest. [11] Eigel stated that Democrats wanted to "bring back the institution of abortion so that kids can get abortions in the state of Missouri. A 1-year-old could get an abortion under this." [12] [13] He then said the proposed amendment "doesn't address" the "institutions of rape or of incest". [14]

The Constitution of the United States provides several basic requirements for eligibility to be elected to the office of President. Individual states did not introduce significant relevant legislation until the 2008 election of Barack Obama, when a controversy known as the birther movement was promoted by various conspiracy theorists. The "birthers" asserted during the 2008 presidential election campaign that Obama was not a natural-born U.S. citizen, as mandated by the Constitution, and thus was ineligible to be President of the United States, prompting several state legislatures to consider legislation aimed at requiring future presidential candidates to provide proof of citizenship by birth before being granted ballot access in their state. None of these efforts led to the passage of currently active laws.
"War on women" is a slogan in United States politics used to describe certain Republican Party policies and legislation as a wide-scale effort to restrict women's rights, especially reproductive rights, including abortion. Prominent Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer, as well as feminists, have used the phrase to criticize proponents of these laws as trying to force their social views on women through legislation. The slogan has been used to describe Republican policies in areas such as access to reproductive health services, particularly birth control and abortion services; the definition of rape for the purpose of the public funding of abortion; the prosecution of criminal violence against women; and workplace discrimination against women.

Set to go into effect in November 2019, a legal challenge against the bill delayed implementation until 2022. The bill was passed in both chambers of the Alabama Legislature in a party-line vote and signed by Republican governor Kay Ivey.
