Bini (stylized in all caps; formerly Star Hunt Academy Girls or SHA Girls) is a Filipino girl group formed in 2019 through ABS-CBN's Star Hunt Academy. The group is composed of eight members: Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena.

Contents

Bini officially debuted on June 11, 2021, with their single, "Born to Win," after two years of training under Star Hunt Academy. [1] Before their debut, the group released a pre-debut single, "Da Coconut Nut," on November 20, 2020. The group has since then garnered national recognition, dubbed the "Nation's Girl Group" due to their vibrant personalities and appeal to their audiences. They became the first Filipino pop group with the most monthly listeners on Spotify [2] and the first to top the Billboard Philippine Songs chart. [3] They are also the first to receive the Billboard Philippines Women in Music "Rising Star" Award. [4]

On June 9, 2024, Bini entered the Top Artist Global Chart on Spotify at 193rd place, making them the first ever Filipino artists to achieve this record. [5]

Name

The group's name was taken from the Tagalog word Binibini which means "young lady", a nod to the group's vision to "embody the idea of a modern Filipina — sweet, fierce, independent, and informed." [6] [7]

Fandom

Fans of Bini are known as "Bloom(s)", commonly stylized as BL∞M(S) with the infinity symbol replacing the Os taking inspiration from the group's tagline "Walo hanggang dulo" (Eight until the end). The name serves as a reminder of Bini's story and journey, it stands for the beginning of springtime that there is always beauty after every cold trial. It was chosen by the Bini members among the name suggestions of fans during a special announcement livestream on February 13, 2021. [8] [9]

History

2018–2020: Formation through Star Hunt Academy

For many years, believing that "the Filipino talent has a place in the global stage," Laurenti Dyogi, ABS-CBN's Head of Entertainment Production, thought of forming a training camp where youth aspiring to become superstars "can develop or further hone their talents." [10] In 2018, ABS-CBN launched the Star Hunt Academy program, which had 250 auditionees between the ages of 16 and 19 years old from all over the Philippines. From this pool of auditionees, in addition to recommendations by talent scouts, the first set of female Star Hunt Academy trainees were selected, which was originally composed of 11 girls. While Dyogi initially planned to debut a nine-member idol girl group, the 11 girl trainees were eventually trimmed down to eight girls: Maraiah Queen "Aiah" Arceta, Nicolette "Colet" Vergara, Mary Loi "Maloi" Ricalde, Gweneth 'Gwen" Apuli, Stacey Aubrey Sevilleja, Mikhaela "Mikha" Lim, Sheena Mae Catacutan, and Jhoanna Robles. [11] [12] Of the eleven members, two—Sheena and Gwen—were originally housemates from Pinoy Big Brother: Otso . [13]

The group was trained from 2018 to 2020 under local coaches, including the professional vocal coach and former chair of the Department of Voice, Music Theater and Dance at the University of the Philippines College of Music, [14] Kitchy Molina, and Austrian-born dance coach Mickey Perz, as well as South Korean coaches from MU Doctor Academy. [10]

On August 3, 2019, the group as SHA trainees were initially introduced on the online pre-show of the PBB Otso Big Night, in which they first performed and were debuted as Star Hunt Academy trainees. They also performed in their first-ever mall show in Taguig and at least two ABS-CBN events. They also appeared in a 2019 National Youth Commission event, where they were proclaimed as Youth Ambassadors, and at the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games thanksgiving celebration. [15]

In May 2020, Dyogi released a performance practice video of the group singing and dancing to "Ngiti" by Young JV and Gary Valenciano on Twitter to show their progress in training. [16] In August 2020, the group participated in the Philippine K-pop Convention's Happy Hallyu Day 4 event, performing K-pop dance covers, including Red Velvet's In & Out, Blackpink's How You Like That and Twice's More & More. 2020: Pre-debut activities, "Da Coconut Nut"

For Bini's pre-debut single, MU Doctor Academy and South Korean music production group Vo3e collaborated to transform national artist Ryan Cayabyab's popular novelty song "Da Coconut Nut" into an electropop remake. In addition MU Doctor Academy collaborated with choreographers Moon Yeon-joo and Kwak Seong-chan, who formerly worked with popular K-pop groups, to create the choreography. [19]

On November 6, 2020, the official lyric video of their pre-debut single "Da Coconut Nut" premiered on the group's official YouTube channel [20] following the release of various teasers and the announcement of their group name, Bini. The official music video then premiered on November 20.[ citation needed ]

On November 21, 2020, Bini performed their first live performance of "Da Coconut Nut" on the noontime variety show It's Showtime . [21]

On December 4, 2020, Bini signed a contract with Star Magic and Star Music. [22]

2021–2022: Debut with "Born to Win"

On May 4, 2021, Bini released their first official debut teaser through a QR code leading to an image that reads "Are you ready for the BINIverse?". This was then followed by multiple of teasers leading to their debut. [23] On the same month, their music label, Star Music, announced the group's official debut with a single entitled "Born to Win". [24] [25] On May 8, it was announced that Bini's debut would happen in two parts, Part I: The Runway, which was held on June 4, 2021, and Part II: The Showcase, which was held on June 11, 2021. [26]

Bini's debut single "Born to Win" was released on June 4, 2021, on various streaming platforms together with the official lyric video, which premiered on Star Music's official YouTube Channel. On the same day, the group had the first part of their debut launch Bini: The Runway, which was held via KTX.PH. The Runway brought together fashion and music as the group donned creations that were especially designed for each Bini member by renowned Filipino designer Francis Libiran. [27] On the same day, Metro released an article about the group's debut, which included pictures of the girls show-casing their Francis Libiran-made outfits in their Metro photoshoot. [28] [29]

The second part of Bini's debut launch, The Showcase was held on June 11, 2021, where Bini interacted with fans and treated them to a mini-concert experience, performing their pre-debut song "Da Coconut Nut" and "Born to Win". The girls also performed three unit performances: Gwen and Sheena performed KZ Tandingan’s "Tagu-Taguan," Colet, Jhoanna, and Maloi sang Janine Berdin’s "Biyaya," while Aiah, Stacey, and Mikha debuted their rap song "World War C," their original composition about having strength amid the pandemic. The Showcase also let fans in on the personal journey of each Bini member and footage of the girls’ rigorous training sessions under ABS-CBN's Star Hunt Academy. [30]

On June 13, 2021, Bini had their first live performance as a debuted group, performing their debut single "Born to Win" on ASAP . [32] This was followed by multiple interviews, guestings, and performances on Magandang Buhay , It's Showtime , MYXclusive, and more.

In August 2021, the group participated in the Philippine K-pop Convention's Happy Hallyu Day 5 event, performing dance covers of various K-pop songs in addition to their own debut single "Born to Win". [33]

Following the release of their debut single, Bini released their third official single entitled "Kapit Lang" on September 10, 2021. The official music video premiered on Bini's official YouTube channel at midnight. [34]

On September 30, 2021, at the pageant Miss Universe Philippines 2021, Bini performed a new spin on "Born to Win". The song was also used as the official song of the Preliminary Swimsuit and Evening Gown Competition of the pageant. [35]

In February 2022, the group was featured on Xpedition's cover as "The Burgeoning Grace" that made Bini as one of the first Filipino celebrities, alongside brother group BGYO, to have an NFT magazine cover and the first ever in the Middle East region launched through the Metaverse. [36]

On September 29, 2022, Bini released their sophomore studio album Feel Good, which consisted of five original songs and two bonus tracks. [37]

2023–present: Domestic success, "Pantropiko" craze and Talaarawan

In late 2023, Bini released the singles "Karera" (Sprint) and "Pantropiko" (Tropical) as their pre-release singles to promote their first extended play (EP) Talaarawan (Diary). [38] [39] "Karera" subsequently became popular in school graduation ceremonies due to the resonance of its themes and lyrics among students, [40] while "Pantropiko" gradually rose to land at first place in the Spotify Charts’ Daily Top Songs for the Philippines list in April 2024. [41]

On March 8, 2024, Bini released Talaarawan, consisting of six songs including "Karera" and "Pantropiko". The group's decision to release the record on International Women's Day was intended to be in alignment with their advocacy for women's empowerment. [42] Bini's success started when "Pantropiko" went viral on TikTok, with almost millions of users joining the "Pantropiko Dance Challenge". [43] By the end of March, Bini had more than two million monthly listeners on Spotify, making them the highest-streamed female OPM artist, as well as the most-streamed P-pop group in the country. [44] [45]

Bini and Star Music announced that the group will have their first-ever major solo concert scheduled on June 28, 2024, at the New Frontier Theater. The solo concert, which is titled "BINIverse", also serves as a celebration as the group, which became dubbed as the "Nation's Girl Group" celebrated their third anniversary in the industry. Tickets went on sale on April 2, 2024, and sold out in less than two hours. Fans then clamored for an additional date for the "BINIverse" concert. Some of the fans also advocated the transfer of the "BINIverse" concert to a bigger venue, specifically the neighboring Araneta Coliseum, with #WeWantBINIverseInAraneta becoming a trending topic on X. On April 4, 2024, due to public demand, the group announced that the "BINIverse" concert will have an additional date. Tickets for the additional date went on sale on April 9, 2024; minutes later, a third day was announced, which is widely considered to be an anniversary gift to their fans. [46] [47] The tickets for the additional dates were also sold out in less than two hours. [48]

Alongside fellow P-pop girl group G22, Bini guested the Chinese reality show Show It All hosted by Lay Zhang, showcasing performances of "Karera", "I Feel Good", and "Pantropiko" on the episodes aired on April 25 and May 2. [49] [50]

On May 30, Star Music announced that Bini will have their first North American tour. [51] On June 1, Star Music announced dates for the tour in Vancouver on August 9, 2024, Edmonton on August 10, Winnipeg on August 16, and Toronto on August 17. [52] A regional concert tour on the upcoming BINIverse concert was announced on June 2, which will be held in Baguio on July 6, Cebu on July 14, and General Santos on July 20. [53]

In June, Bini entered the Top Artists Global chart on Spotify, reaching 193rd place. [54] On June 10, Bini opened their own website [55] and announced plans to release a new single, titled Cherry on Top. [56] On June 11, the group held its first “National Happy BINI Day” at One Ayala in Makati to commemorate their third anniversary. [57] On the 126th anniversary of Philippine independence on June 12, the group performed in festivities organized by the Philippine government in Quirino Grandstand, but had their performance cut short for safety reasons caused by unruly crowds that caused medical emergencies among some attendees. [58] On June 14, Bini became the first Filipino artist to top Spotify's Daily Top Artists Philippines chart, surpassing Taylor Swift. [59] [60]

Artistry

Bini's pre-debut single, "Da Coconut Nut" (2020), is a genre-bending Original Pilipino Music or P-Pop infuses with electronic music elements. It was adapted from the classic Filipino novelty song of the same name. [61] The version of this iconic novelty song was given a new flavor, upbeat, fun and light. [61] ABS-CBN News' Zin Francis Alcasid noted that "the group is presented as identifiably Filipino, aside from the pre-debut single being an Electropop revival of an iconic OPM tune, the sound and phrasing is also very Pinoy". [62]

Philanthropy

On November 16, 2019, as the Youth Ambassadors of National Youth Commission, the group took part in the 2019 FITFIL YOUTH AGAINST DRUGS (and Obesity) campaign to encourage youths to stay fit and to have a healthy lifestyle. The event was held at the SM Mall of Asia by the Bay. [63] [64]

On November 28, 2020, Bini participated on a virtual fundraising concert entitled #TikTokTogetherPH hosted by TikTok Philippines for the benefit of Generation Hope, World Vision, Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), and Balcony Entertainment along with other artists and vloggers in the Philippines. [65]

On December 8, 2020, Bini along with the boy group BGYO held a joint auction charity event called #BINIficiaryAucSHAn for the benefit of Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) victims. The project ended up raising a total of ₱125,642, from the groups' auctioned trainee shirts, as well as several other belongings and from the fund raised via Kumu. All the proceeds were donated to the Cagayan and Isabela relief operations through ABS-CBN Foundation – Sagip Kapamilya. [66] [67] On December 20, the group, alongside other P-pop idol groups, performed on ABS-CBN's "Ikaw ang Liwanag at Ligaya: The ABS-CBN Christmas Special" pre-show entitled KTnX ang Babait Ninyo: ABS-CBN Christmas Special Fundraising Show, a benefit show for the survivors of Typhoon Rolly and Typhoon Ulysses. On March 28, 2021, the group was invited to perform on Positive Vibes for the Positive+, a benefit concert organized by the award-winning director Cathy Garcia Molina for NICKL Entertainment via Kumu, along with other artists from Pinoy Big Brother, Star Magic, Polaris, Star Hunt Academy and BGYO. Webcast

On March 15, 2021, ABS-CBN announced that they are partnering with the Filipino social networking service Kumu to bring over 100 Kapamilya artists that will stream on the app, participate in Kumu campaigns, and get to interact with their fans more regularly on the platform, it is touted as the biggest celebrity streaming partnership in the country.

Among the stars that will be bringing their talents and star power to Kumu are the Big 4 and other ex-housemates of Pinoy Big Brother: Connect , rising P-Pop groups BGYO, Bini, and MNL48 and more artists from Star Magic, Star Hunt, Polaris ( It's Showtime talents), Star Music, and Rise Artists Studio. John Lloyd Toreliza, known professionally as JL Toreliza is a Filipino singer-songwriter and a member of the Filipino boy group BGYO. Toreliza has co-written BGYO's debut single: "The Light" (2021) and "Runnin'" (2021).

"Kundiman" is a song recorded by the Filipino boy band BGYO. It was released on 7 October 2021 as the eighth single of their debut album The Light. It was written and composed by Akira Morishita with additional lyrics from Jerwin Nicomedez. The track was one of the BGYO songs—"Kundiman", "He's Into Her", "The Baddest"—chosen to be part of The Lunar Codex's "Polaris Collection" time capsules bound to the Moon in 2023. The track peaked at number 1 on Deezer Charts 100 in United Arab Emirates.

<i>Be Us</i> 2022 studio album by BGYO

Be Us is the second studio album of Filipino boy band BGYO. It was released on 3 November 2022, through Star Music, a year after its predecessor, The Light (2021). The album's lyrical content was inspired from BGYO's Filipino roots and conferred tribute to the Original Pilipino Music which conveyed a modern-day concept of love and way of courting. Be Us is primarily a pop record, encompassing hip hop, EDM, and disco genres with elements of synth-pop, funk, and R&B which contains eight original tracks including the pre-album release single Tumitigil Ang Mundo, the lead single Magnet, the key track "PNGNP", the song written and composed by BGYO member Mikki entitled "Laro" and four more songs—"Game On", "Be Us", "Panahon", "Extraordinary".

The discography of Filipino girl group Bini consists of two albums, two extended plays, thirteen singles, and two soundtrack albums. On November 20, 2020, the group released their pre-debut single "Da Coconut Nut" which was adapted from the classic Filipino novelty song of the same name. On June 11, 2021, Bini officially debuted, with their debut single "Born to Win".
