Brian Young (born June 8, 1972) is an American football coach and former defensive back who is currently the head coach of the Stetson Hatters of the Pioneer Football League (PFL). He played college football at Georgia Southern and was in the Indoor Football League (IFL) before starting a coaching career in c. 2002.

Early life and playing career

Young was born on June 8, 1972. He attended Groves High School, where he was a "pretty good" three-sport athlete. [1] He played defensive back at Georgia Southern, where he earned a B.S. in 1997. [2]

Young was invited to NFL training camps in 1998 and 1999, but did not sign with a team. [3] He later played briefly in the Indoor Football League (IFL) with the Bismarck Blaze and Duluth-Superior Lumberjacks. [2]

Coaching career

Young coached Alfred E. Beach High School and Savannah High School in football and basketball, leading his Savannah basketball team to a 32–2 record and a state runner-up finish. [3]

In c. 2002, Young became an assistant coach for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League (AFL). [2] He later served as secondary and defensive backs coach for the Grand Rapids Rampage, before joining Louisiana College in 2004 as secondary and special teams coach. [4] He returned to the Grand Rapids Rampage as defensive coordinator in 2005, and after that season finished, became head coach of the Canton Legends. [4]

In 2005, Young became secondary and special teams coach at Mississippi College, eventually being named recruiting coordinator and defensive coordinator as well. [5] He left to become the defensive backs coach at Cornell in 2010, where he served two seasons. [3]

In 2013, Young was named defensive coordinator at Stetson University, which was bringing back their football team for the first time since the 1950s. He served seven seasons in that position, helping the team place first or second in conference pass defense in every year. [2]

Young left Stetson to become senior defensive analyst at Georgia Southern in 2020. [2] He came back to Stetson in 2021, being named head coach. [1] He led them to a 4–7 record in his first year as head coach. [6]

The West Michigan ThunderHawks were an indoor football team based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The team was most recently a member of the Indoor Football League. From their inception in 2007 until 2009, the ThunderHawks were known as the Muskegon Thunder and played at L.C. Walker Arena. In 2010, the team moved to Grand Rapids, MI. This is where the downfall of the team took place. The season started off hopeful with a 5–2 record. After week 7 the players were promised money at a later date as long as they played. Starting in 2010 the ThunderHawks played their home games at the DeltaPlex Arena, in nearby Walker, Michigan. The Thunderhawks did not field a team in 2011.

Bob Valesente is a former American football player and coach. He played college football at Ithaca College and spent more than 35 years as a football coach. He was the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks football team from 1986 to 1987 and has also served as an assistant football coach in the National Football League (NFL) with multiple teams.

Marvin Maurice Jones is an American former professional football player who was a middle linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons during the 1990s and early 2000s. Jones played college football for the Florida State Seminoles and was recognized as an All-American twice. He was drafted in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New York Jets and he played his entire professional career for the Jets. In 2018, Jones was the head coach for the Cedar Rapids Titans in the Indoor Football League (IFL) and served as head coach of the Omaha Beef in the Champions Indoor Football (CIF) from 2020-2022. Steve Thonn is an American football coach. He was previously a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL) for the Houston Thunderbears, Grand Rapids Rampage and Cleveland Gladiators. Thonn is also a former AFL player. He played WR/DB for the Chicago Bruisers (1988) and the Albany Firebirds (1990–1993). He was the offensive coordinator of the Georgia Force from 2004 to 2007 before being hired as the Rampage head coach.

Rodney Blackshear is a former arena football wide receiver who played in the Arena Football League (AFL). Blackshear played college football at Texas Tech University.

Kevin Guy is an arena football coach and former wide receiver and defensive back who is the head coach for the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League (IFL). He played his college football at the University of West Alabama, and was an AFL wide receiver and defensive back from 1996 to 1999. He has been a football coach since 2000, and first served as a head coach in 2000 as the interim head coach for the New Jersey Red Dogs. After being the defensive coordinator for the San Jose SaberCats from 2006 to 2007, he became the Rattlers head coach in 2008. The Stetson Hatters football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Stetson University located in the U.S. state of Florida. The team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Pioneer Football League. Stetson's first football team was fielded in 1901, but the school dropped the sport in 1956 and did not reinstate it until 2013. The team plays its home games at the 6,000 seat Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand, Florida. The Hatters are coached by Brian Young.
