The Bullough Cup is a knock-out competition in the sport of shinty.

It is played for by reserve-level teams from the South District of Shinty, which includes all of Scotland South of Ballachulish as well as England. All teams playing in South Division Two, Kyles Athletic Seconds, Lochside Rovers, Inveraray Second Team, Glasgow Mid-Argyll Second Team, as well as non-league teams such as London Camanachd are eligible. Kyles Athletics Second Team are the current holders, having won it in 2023. [1]

History

The trophy was presented by Sir George Bullough, Victorian playboy and raconteur, who owned the hunting estate on the island of Rùm. The trophy was first played for in 1906 with an abeyance for the Great War. Its early years saw the competition dominated by teams from North Argyll, then Oban. With the amalgamation of the Dunn and Southern Leagues, the trophy become more open. The trophy has had two significant periods of abeyance, one in the lead up to the Second World War, and the other in the mid-Sixties. There was also a shorter period in the 1990s.

Lochside Rovers were champions in 2009 defeating Kyles Athletic in a rearranged final in Tighnabruaich after the original final was called off.

The Bullough Cup has seen several interesting developments in recent years, in 2005 it was run as a league cup, which marked the re-entry of Col-Glen and London to competition as well as the first senior fixtures of Aberdour Shinty Club. It has also seen the first Camanachd Association fixture in England for 80 years [2] and the victory by the Highlanders in 2006.

As of 2010, the opening rounds of the cup will be played midweek, in order to reduce the backlog of fixtures that has regularly afflicted shinty. [3]

Glasgow Mid-Argyll won the 2010 cup defeating Kyles Athletic 3–1, [4] and again in 2022 winning 2–0 against Kilmory.

In 2014, the Bullough Plate was created for first round losers to compete for and this was won by Glenorchy. [5] [6] The Bullough Plate was discontinued in 2015.[ citation needed ]

Strachur and District Shinty Club is a Shinty team from Strachur, Argyll, Scotland. The club re-entered league shinty in 2017 after a year at abeyance at senior level as of March 2016. The side was put back into abeyance in 2018 before returning in 2022 with a combined team of players based in Strachur, Dunoon and Glasgow under the banner of Strachur-Dunoon..

Kilmory Camanachd is a shinty club from Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scotland. The club was founded in 1977 in its present form. The club plays in South Division One and has a reserve side in the Bullough cup. The club is associated with Dunadd camanachd

Taynuilt Shinty Club is a shinty team based in Taynuilt, Scotland. The club has existed in several different forms most recently in junior form but has reformed and won South Division Two in 2009.

The South Division One is the third tier of the Shinty league system. League champions are awarded the Dunn Cup and play-off against the North Division One champions for promotion to the National Division.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Albert Smith Medal</span>

The Albert Smith Memorial Medal is the award given to the Man of the Match in the final of the Camanachd Cup, the blue riband trophy of the sport of shinty. It has been presented every year since 1972 by the Smith family of Fort William in honour of Albert Smith Sr. The widow of his only son, John Victor Smith, currently presents the medal. Albert Sr.'s grandson, Victor Smith is a former player for Fort William Shinty Club but never won the medal despite featuring as a key player in several Fort William wins. Victor Smith currently coaches Fort William Shinty Club along with his cousin Adi Robertson. Victor's son, John Victor Smith, plays full forward for the Fort.

The South Division Two is the fourth tier of the Shinty league system. League Champions are promoted to the South Division One.

SCOTS Camanachd is the only shinty team in the British Armed Forces.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Fingal Memorial Shield</span> Trophy awarded for winning St Andrews Sixes

The Fingal Memorial Shield is a trophy in the sport of shinty. It is currently the trophy presented to the winners of the St Andrew's Sixes, an international six-a-side tournament.

The Single Team Club Competition is a knock-out cup competition in the sport of shinty. It was first competed for in 2022. Col-Glen Shinty Club were the first winners. Whether the trophy gains another name or sponsor in future remains to be seen.
