The fortieth series of the British medical drama television series Casualty , titled Driving Force, began airing on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2023. The series focuses on the professional and personal lives of medical and ancillary staff at the emergency department (ED) of the fictional Holby City Hospital. Jon Sen continues his role as the executive producer and Liza Mellody continues as series producer. Driving Force is the third series of the shorter narrative arcs introduced by Sen.

The series commenced in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2023 on BBC One, a week after the conclusion of the thirty-ninth series. It is produced by BBC Studios. [1] Jon Sen continues his role as executive producer. Liza Mellody serves as series producer. [2] Filming for Casualty primarily takes place in a purpose-built studio at the BBC Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, although the nature of the show means that filming also takes place on-location. On-location filming often occurs in Cardiff and other areas of southern Wales. [1]

Driving Force was initially promoted under the previous series structure, with series 38 commencing from the episode "Aftermath", [3] but was subsequently recategorised to align with the story arc format.

Cast

Driving Force features a cast of characters working for the NHS within the emergency department of Holby City Hospital and the Holby Ambulance Service. [4] Most cast members from the previous series reprise their roles in this series. William Beck appears as Dylan Keogh, a consultant in emergency medicine. [5] Di Botcher portrays Jan Jenning, the operational duty manager at Holby Ambulance Service. [5] Anna Chell stars as Jodie Whyte, a staff nurse, and Milo Clarke plays Teddy Gowan, a paramedic. [5] Nigel Harman features as consultant Max Cristie, the department's clinical lead. [5] Shalisha James-Davis plays Paige Allcott, an F1 doctor, and Elinor Lawless stars as consultant Stevie Nash. Casualty@Holby City (styled as CASUAL+Y @ HOLBY CI+Y) is a series of special crossover episodes of BBC medical dramas Casualty and Holby City. While Casualty was launched on 6 September 1986, and its spin-off Holby City was first aired on 12 January 1999, the first full crossover episode between the two programmes was not broadcast until 26 December 2004. As of 27 December 2005, four crossover specials have been aired, comprising nine episodes total. Although further crossovers of storylines and characters have since occurred, they have not been broadcast under the Casualty@Holby City title.
