Since being formed in 1963, the DEC has had strong relationships with major UK broadcasters in particular the BBC and ITV, who provide airtime to broadcast emergency appeals upon its recommendation. It is a member of the global Emergency Appeals Alliance, which reports that since its first television appeal in 1966, the DEC has raised over £1.4 billion.

Idol Gives Back was the name of a charitable campaign that spanned two episodes of American Idol during its sixth season. A second Idol Gives Back concert and fundraiser occurred on April 9, 2008, during the seventh season of the show. Idol Gives Back was not held in 2009 due to the economic crisis and recession. The executive producer released a statement saying that it was not the time to be asking for money from the American public. However, the fundraiser returned on April 21, 2010 during the top 7 results show of season 9. It did not return in future seasons.
T4 on the Beach was an annual British one-day music event which was held on the beach at Weston-super-Mare and televised on Channel 4. The event began in 2003 as Pop Beach in Great Yarmouth, changing to the current title and venue in 2005. The day consisted of a number of major contemporary pop and rock music acts from the UK and overseas, performing short sets in front of an audience of over 40,000. In addition to the main stage a smaller 4Music stage has provided a platform for newer upcoming bands, renamed in 2010 to the T4 Sessions stage.

It culminated in a live broadcast on BBC One on the evening of Friday 16 November, through to the morning of Saturday 17 November. The broadcast was hosted by Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton, joined by other guest presenters throughout the night. The voice over reading out hourly totals was Alan Dedicoat. The event broke all previous records with a total of £19,089,771 raised by the closing minute. The show's average audience was 9.56 million, a huge amount higher than the previous year's event.

The broadcast was hosted by Terry Wogan, with Tess Daly from 7 pm until 10 pm and Fearne Cotton from 10:35 pm until 2 am. Peter Andre hosted from the BT Tower. The show was broadcast from BBC Television Centre in London but also included regional opt-outs hosted from various locations around the UK including Cardiff and Glasgow, viewers in Northern Ireland could see the whole show Live from London for the first time instead of having their own opt out as in previous years instead the Northern Ireland concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster and highlights on BBC One Northern Ireland the next day with Reggie Yates and John Daly. They returned to Belfast every so often to show fundraising from Northern Ireland but it wasn't a Live broadcast as in previous years. In 2010 contributions fell short of the previous year's fund-raising total. The 2010 event raised £18,098,199 compared to £20,309,747 in 2009.
