Classic Center Arena is an indoor arena under-construction in Athens, Georgia. [1] [2] It is part of the Classic Center complex and is intended as an upgrade to the 440 Pavilion, a much smaller 2,000-seat arena. It will become the new home of the UGA Ice Dawgs of the College Hockey South conference and on March 28, 2024, it was announced it would be home to an FPHL expansion team, [3] later named the Athens Rock Lobsters. It will have a capacity of 8,500. Opening is planned for Spring 2024. It is owned by the Unified Government of Athens Clarke County.

History

In January 2019, the Classic Center Authority announced their intent to construct the new Classic Center Arena adjacent to the existing site. [4] The arena will be connected to the existing Classic Center, the Multimodal Transportation Center and the downtown district via a new elevated walkway.

On March 28, 2024, it was announced that Athens Pro Hockey will play in the Federal Prospects Hockey League and officially call the Classic Center Arena home. [5]

The Danville Dashers are a hockey team from Danville, Illinois, in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. The Dashers were named in honor of the original Danville Dashers. From 2011 to 2020, the team played their home games at David S. Palmer Arena, which was also home to the original Dashers that played in the Continental Hockey League from 1981 to 1986, but were voted out of the arena in 2021. On February 28, 2024, it was announced that the David S. Palmer Arena board had accepted the lease from Barry Soskin and Diane Short to bring the Danville Dashers back for the 2024-25 season.

Located within is Akins Ford Arena at The Classic Center, a large event hall that also serves as a 2,000-seat arena. The arena is home to the UGA Ice Dawgs hockey team and formerly the Peach State Cats arena football team. The Classic Center also contains a 2,122-seat theatre.

The team folded in 2021 after an arena contract dispute after three seasons. The team made the playoffs in each of their 3 seasons.

The Athens Rock Lobsters are an upcoming professional ice hockey team based in Athens, Georgia. They will play at the Classic Center Arena and are a member of the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Their inaugural season will be the 2024–25 season.
