Coin of the Year Award

The Coin of the Year Award (COTY) is an awards program founded and annually conducted by the American publisher Krause Publications of Iola, Wisconsin, and directed at the coin producing industry. [1] [2] Awards are given for numismatic design, artistic vision and craftsmanship. A panel of international judges chooses the coins from those issued two years prior to the year of the award. [3]

About

The COTY was awarded for the first time in 1984, in which coins issued in 1982 were assessed. [4] A panel of judges chooses ten coins to be nominees for each of ten categories. [5] These nominees will then be reviewed by an international panel of judges who are numismatic experts, journalist, authors, coin designers, and mint, bank and museum officials. [6] Category winners are selected in the first round of voting and Coin of the Year in the second round, chosen from the category winners. [7]

Awards are currently given in ten categories. When the awards were first started, there were six categories. Five categories have since been added and one was dropped.

The Chester L. Krause Memorial Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor conferred by the American Numismatic Association. The award was formerly named after Farran Zerbe, a one-time president of the American Numismatic Association. It is given in recognition of numerous years of outstanding, dedicated service to numismatics. The criteria for the nominee should be that the individual is considered someone who has rendered numerous years of outstanding service to the ANA as well as the field of numismatics. An additional qualification is that the nominee should be a former Medal of Merit and Glenn Smedley Memorial Award recipient. The award is limited only to members of the ANA.

Russell Alphonse Rulau was an American numismatist. He was involved in coin collecting for over 60 years. From his earliest days as a casual collector, Rulau contributed to numismatics as a writer, editor and club organizer. His interest in world coins led him to create the "Coin of the Year" award. The award is presented annually by Krause Publications' World Coin News. Rulau coined the term "exonumia" in 1960.

Kenneth Luster Hallenbeck, Jr. is a former president of the American Numismatic Association. He has served with the ANA for 58 years. In recognition of his service and dedication to numismatics, he has received various honours from the ANA. He is the recipient of the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award, the Medal of Merit, the Exemplary Service Award, and the 1999 Farran Zerbe Memorial Award for distinguished service.

The 100 yen coin is a denomination of Japanese yen. These coins were first minted in 1957 using a silver alloy, before the current design was adopted with an alloy change in 1967. The Little Rock Central High School Desegregation silver dollar is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 2007. The coin commemorates the desegregation of the school in the fall of 1957 when nine African-American students enrolled in the school. The obverse of the coin was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers, while the reverse was designed and engraved by Don Everhart. The coin won the Coin of the Year award from Numismatic News for Best Contemporary Event in 2009.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Australian Silver Kangaroo (bullion)</span> One troy ounce silver coin

The Silver Kangaroo is a silver coin originating from Australia and produced at the Perth Mint. This is a bullion coin meant for investment in silver. An Australian silver kangaroo coin, produced at the Royal Australian Mint (RAM), is collected for its numismatic value. The obverse of the coin always depicts Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse side features a red kangaroo jumping. Unlike the Australian silver koala and silver kookaburra coins, the reverse image does not change every year. The obverse image on the RAM silver coin does change every year. The mintage every year is unlimited, unlike the koala and kookaburra coins which have a maximum mintage of 300,000 and 500,000 respectively. No special editions or privy marks have appeared for the one-ounce bullion coin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mintmaster mark</span>

Mintmaster marks are often the initials of the mintmaster of a mint or small symbols for example at the size of the letters on a coin inscription to denote the coins made under his direction. With his mark, the mintmaster assumed responsibility for ensuing the coins issued by his mint were in accordance with the regulations. Mintmaster marks were used as early as the time of bracteate coinage in the Holy Roman Empire, but these can only rarely be deciphered. All mintmaster marks since the beginning of the minting of Thalers have been identified.
