It was founded on 18 March 1988, after the extinction of the rink hockey squad of ABC Braga, a local handball club. It has about 400 members. The league is contested by 14 teams, with the top four teams qualifying for the following season's Rink Hockey Euroleague and the fifth to eighth placed teams qualifying for the World Skate Europe Cup. The bottom three teams are relegated to the second-tier Portuguese Roller Hockey Second Division.

The CIRH Roller Hockey World Club Championship is a discontinued worldwide competition for the best roller hockey teams in the world. This competition was held for the first time in 2006, at Luanda, Angola and for the second and last time in 2008, at Reus, Spain. The competition was sanctioned by the International Rink Hockey Committee.

The Women's Roller Hockey World Cup is a competition between the best female national teams in the World. It takes place every two years and it was organized by the FIRS until its integration into World Skate.

The Pan-American Roller Hockey Club Championship is an annual roller hockey club competition organized by World Skate America - Rink Hockey with the most successful teams of the America. Since its foundation the Argentina teams have dominated the competition. Until 2013 and in 2015 and 2016 it was organized by the South American Skating Confederation (CSP), in 2017 it was organized by the Pan-American Skating Confederation and since 2018 it has been organized by World Skate America - Rink Hockey.

NRBB is the biggest Roller Hockey Clubs Championship in Benelux. In 2015 is disputed by teams from EHRC Marathon, RV Brunssum/ZRC, RC de Lichtstad and Valkenswaardse RC from Netherlands, and Kon Modern RCW from Belgium.

The club's men's roller hockey team competes at local level, at the Luanda Provincial Roller Hockey Championship and at the Angolan Roller Hockey Championship. The roller hockey team of Petro Atlético has been the most titled team in Angola for many years. In recent years, its leadership has been successfully challenged by Juventude de viana, and by Académica de Luanda more recently.
