Colossal Order is a Finnish video game developer known for its business simulation game series Cities in Motion and for its city-builder series Cities: Skylines . [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] The company was founded in Tampere, Finland in 2009. The developer is closely linked to Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive, [7] which tests, markets, sells, distributes, and owns the intellectual property of all games by Colossal Order. [8] The CEO of Colossal Order is Mariina Hallikainen. [9]

History

Colossal Order was founded in the summer of 2009 by a group of game developers of the mobile game company Universomo. Mariina Hallikainen was hired from outside of Universomo as the CEO of the new company. [8]

At first, Colossal Order had difficulties obtaining funding for its first game, the business simulation game Cities in Motion , that was already in development when the company was founded. [8] Investors thought that Cities in Motion would not attract a large enough clientele. Instead of big investors, the first steps of the company were funded by Finnish public instruments – Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, Tekes, and DigiDemo finance of the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture – as well as small private investors. [7]

In its early phase, the company was coached by the Yritystalli program of the Tampere University of Technology, [8] but advice was sought directly from experienced Finnish game development companies as well, specifically Remedy Entertainment and Frozenbyte. [7] Upon being founded, Colossal Order compared dozens of publishers and ended up signing a publishing agreement with Paradox Interactive after over a year's worth of negotiations. [8]

In October 2015, Colossal Order was awarded the Finnish Game Developer of the Year (Finnish : Vuoden suomalainen pelinkehittäjä) award at the DigiExpo  [ fi ] convention. The judges thanked Colossal Order for focusing: "from its inception ... on – in addition to developing games – also developing its business model". [10]

Games

The relationship between Colossal Order and its publisher Paradox Interactive has been characterized as constructive. Colossal Order has the freedom to create games without limitations set by the publisher, bar those on schedules. [7]

Unlike the game developers that founded it, Colossal Order does not develop mobile games. [7] Instead, the company focuses on PC games. [10] Employees of the company have their own internal wiki platform for developing games. [11] Games by Colossal Order are known for their active modding communities. [11] One of the programmers at the company works full-time on modding tools. [12]

The best-known game of the company [13] is the city-building game Cities: Skylines published on March 10, 2015. It competes with games of the SimCity and Cities XL series. A total of 14 expansion packs, 22 content packs and 23 music packs were released for the game.

Cities: Skylines II was announced on March 6, 2023 and released on October 24, 2023 for Windows. [14] [15] Console versions of the game were delayed until Q2 2024. [16]

Housemarque is the oldest active developer in Finland and has about 110 employees as of 2023. It was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in June 2021, becoming a part of PlayStation Studios.

Universomo also had offices in Helsinki, Finland and San Diego, United States. The studio focused on games for mobile phones, the iPhone and the N-Gage. On January 12, 2010, THQ announced the Nintendo DS title Beat City, developed by Universomo, marking the developer's first entry to the handheld gaming market.

<i>Crusader Kings II</i> 2012 video game

Crusader Kings II is a grand strategy game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. Set in the Middle Ages, the game was released on February 14, 2012, as a sequel to 2004's Crusader Kings. On October 18, 2019, the video game became free to play. A sequel, Crusader Kings III, was released on September 1, 2020. Crusader Kings II stood out from earlier Paradox games in that it attracted a more widespread audience, contributing to the growth of the company.

<i>Prison Architect</i> 2015 video game

Prison Architect is a private prison construction and management simulation video game developed and published by Introversion Software. It was made available as a crowdfunded paid alpha pre-order on September 25, 2012 with updates that were scheduled every three to four weeks until 2023. With over 2,000,000 copies sold, Prison Architect made over US$10.7 million in pre-order sales for the alpha version. Prison Architect was an entrant in the 2012 Independent Games Festival. The game was available on Steam's Early Access program, and was officially released on October 6, 2015.

Cities in Motion 2 is a 2013 business simulation game that was developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive and is the sequel to the popular mass transit simulation game Cities in Motion. As with its predecessor, the goal of the game is to create efficient public transport systems in different major cities of the world. In this edition, there are several new features that the developers introduced based on community feedback about the previous game, including day/night cycles, rush hours and the ability to create timetables. The additions also include dynamic cities where players' decisions have a notable impact on city growth, and the inclusion of cooperative and competitive multi-player. The developer of Cities in Motion 2, Colossal Order, also developed Cities: Skylines, which is also a city building game with a mass transit system.

In Stellaris, players take control of an interstellar civilization on the galactic stage and are tasked with exploring, colonizing, and managing their region of the galaxy, encountering other civilizations that they can then engage in diplomacy, trade, or warfare with. A large part of the game involves dealing with both scripted and emergent events, through which new empires alter the balance of power, powerful crises threaten the galaxy, or event chains tell the story of forgotten empires. It was released worldwide for Windows, macOS, and Linux on May 9, 2016 and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Stellaris: Console Edition on February 26, 2019.

<i>Surviving Mars</i> 2018 video game

Surviving Mars is a city building survival video game initially developed by the Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games, and later by Abstraction Games, and published by Paradox Interactive. It was released on Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 15, 2018. The player serves as an overseer who must build a colony on Mars and ensure the survival of the colonists. A spiritual successor, Surviving the Aftermath, was released in 2021.

A sequel to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004), the game is part of the World of Darkness series and based on the tabletop role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade. The game was initially developed by Hardsuit Labs, but by 2021 had been moved to The Chinese Room. It is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in late 2024.

Cities: Skylines II is a 2023 city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. The game is a sequel to 2015's Cities: Skylines and expands upon many of its simulation factors such as simulated city and population sizes with improved traffic AI and management schemes. It was released for Windows on October 24, 2023, and is targeted for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in October 2024 according to a post by Paradox Interactive. Critical reception praised its gameplay but criticized its performance requirements and other technical flaws.

Karoliina Korppoo is a Finnish game designer who has worked at Colossal Order and now runs her own start-up company called 10th Muse. She is known as the lead designer of the Cities: Skylines city building video game, which has sold more than 6 million copies as well as being one of the two Finns who have ever been invited to speak at a TED main conference. Korppoo's current main project is Sana Stories, a platform for writing and reading interactive stories.
