Quintana Roo is a state in southeast Mexico established out of the Quintana Roo Territory in 1974 with seven municipalities, which has since grown into eleven municipalities. According to the 2020 Mexican census, it has the twenty-fourth largest population of all states with 1,857,985 inhabitants and is the 19th largest by land area spanning 44,705.2 square kilometres (17,260.8 sq mi).

Mexico uses four main time zones as of February 2015. Most of the country observes Daylight Saving Time (DST).

  1. Zona Sureste covers the state of Quintana Roo is UTC−05:00 year round. It is the equivalent of U.S. Eastern Standard Time.
  2. Zona Centro covers the eastern three-fourths of Mexico, including Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. For most of the year, it is the equivalent of U.S. Central Time and observes DST.
  3. Zona Pacífico covers the states of Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Sonora. For most of the year, it is the equivalent of U.S. Mountain Time. The state of Sonora, like most of the adjacent U.S. state of Arizona, does not observe DST.
  4. Zona Noroeste covers the state of Baja California. It is identical to U.S. Pacific Time, including the DST schedule.
Sistema Sac Actun Flooded cave system in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Sistema Sac Actun is an underwater cave system situated along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula with passages to the north and west of the city of Tulum. Discovery of a connection to the Sistema Dos Ojos in 2018 made it the longest known underwater cave system.

Same-sex marriage in Quintana Roo is performed and recognized in all municipalities of the state. The first two same-sex marriages occurred in Kantunilkin on 28 November 2011 after it was discovered that the state's Civil Code does not specify sex or gender requirements for marriage. However, future same-sex marriages were suspended in January 2012 upon review by the state's Secretary of State. The two same-sex marriages in the state were annulled by the Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge Angulo, in April 2012, but these annulments were reversed by the Secretary of State on 3 May. The Secretary of State's decision allows for future same-sex marriages to be performed in Quintana Roo.
