Denise W. Merrill (born October 8,1948) is an American politician who most recently served as the Connecticut Secretary of the State from 2011 to 2022. [1] A member of the Democratic Party,Merrill was previously a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives.
Merrill graduated from the University of Connecticut. [2] She attended but did not graduate from the San Francisco Law School,now merged with Alliant International University,and was admitted to the State Bar of California. [3]
Merrill was first elected to office in 1993 in a special election [4] [5] and served as the House Majority Leader after being elected to that position prior to the 2009 legislative session and until becoming Secretary of the State. Previously,Merrill had served as the House Chair on the Appropriations Committee from 2005 to 2008. In the State House she represented Fifty-Fourth Assembly District,which includes the towns of Mansfield and Chaplin.
Following the state Democratic primary held on August 10,2010,Merrill became her party's nominee for Secretary of the State for the November 2010 election. [6] She went on to defeat Republican candidate Jerry Farrell Jr. on November 2. As a serving Secretary of State,she is a part of the National Association of Secretaries of State and was also elected its president for the 2016–2017 term. [2]
On June 23,2021,she announced her intent not to seek re-election in 2022. [7]
On June 28,2022,Merrill announced her resignation effective June 30,in order to spend more time caring for her ailing husband. [8]
She currently serves on the Board of Advisors of Let America Vote,an organization founded by former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander that aims to end voter suppression. [9]
Merrill is also a classically trained pianist. She has three grown children and five grandchildren.

Ella Rosa Giovianna Oliva Grasso was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as the 83rd Governor of Connecticut from January 8,1975,to December 31,1980,after rejecting past offers of candidacies for Senate and Governor. She was the first woman elected to this office and the first woman to be elected governor of a U.S. state without having been the spouse or widow of a former governor. She resigned as governor due to her battle with ovarian cancer.
Eunice Groark was an American politician who was the first woman elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1990. Groark ran on the ticket of A Connecticut Party (ACP) with Lowell Weicker,winning the election with 41% of the vote. After Weicker declined to run for a second term,Groark ran for governor on the A Connecticut Party ticket but lost the election to Republican candidate John G. Rowland.
Susan Bysiewicz is an American politician and attorney who is the 109th lieutenant governor of Connecticut,serving since January 9,2019. She previously served as the 72nd secretary of the state of Connecticut from 1999 to 2011. She was briefly a candidate for governor of Connecticut in 2010,before dropping out to run for Connecticut Attorney General. She was disqualified from running for the office by the Connecticut Supreme Court and announced in 2011 that she was running for the United States Senate in the 2012 election to replace the retiring Joe Lieberman. She lost the Democratic primary to U.S. Representative Chris Murphy,who went on to win the general election.
Denise Lynn Nappier is an American who served as Connecticut State Treasurer,from 1999 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party,she was first elected in 1998 and was re-elected in 2002,2006,2010 and 2014. She is the first African-American woman elected to statewide office in the history of Connecticut,the first woman elected State Treasurer in Connecticut history,and the first African-American woman elected to serve as state treasurer in the United States. In 2011,she was named to the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame.

Jahana Flemming Hayes is an American educator and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Connecticut's 5th congressional district since 2019. The district,once represented by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy,comprises much of the state's northwestern portion,including New Britain,Danbury,and Waterbury. A member of the Democratic Party,Hayes is the first African-American woman and African-American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. She was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year in 2016.
Shawn T. Wooden is an American attorney and politician who has been serving as the state treasurer of Connecticut since January 2019. Wooden previously served as a member of the Hartford City Council. He is not seeking reelection as state treasurer in 2022.

The 2022 Connecticut Secretary of the State election will take place on November 8,2022,to elect the next Secretary of the State of Connecticut. Incumbent Democrat Denise Merrill planned to retire at the end of her elected term,but resigned June 30 to care for her ailing husband. Governor Lamont appointed former associate attorney general Mark Kohler to the position. Kohler was sworn in July 11. He will not be a candidate for the office in the November election.
