The fifth series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 1 September 2003 and 14 June 2004. It consisted of 182 episodes. The series saw Natalie J. Robb leave her role as Jude Carlyle after three years on the series. She was followed by original cast member Maggie Cronin, who departed from her role as Kate McGuire. It also saw the castings of two new receptionists: Akemnji Ndifornyen as Nathan Bailey), who also doubled as the estranged son of established Ben Kwarme (Ariyon Bakare), and Andrea Green as Sarah Finch. The series five episode "Say a Little Prayer" also became Doctors' first win at the British Soap Awards, claiming the Best Single Episode accolade in 2004. Finch then won the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer a year later for her role as Sarah.

Cast

The fifth series saw Natalie J. Robb leave her role as Dr. Jude Carlyle after three years on Doctors. Jude's exit storyline sees her cheat on her boyfriend with his father and become pregnant with a baby with Down syndrome, moving back to Glasgow to have her family's support. [1] Original cast member Maggie Cronin also departed from her role as Kate McGuire. [2]

Two new receptionists were cast for the series: Nathan Bailey (Akemnji Ndifornyen) and Sarah Finch (Andrea Green). [3] In a shock twist, Nathan was revealed to be the estranged son of established character Ben Kwarme (Ariyon Bakare) who initially keeps his identity a secret. [4] Mac McGuire's (Christopher Timothy) also had a return stint during the series, during which he rapes Faith Walker (Eva Fontaine). [5]

Reception

At the 2004 British Academy Television Awards, Doctors was longlisted for the Award for Best Soap and Continuing Drama. [6] The episode "Say a Little Prayer", broadcast in November 2003, then won the British Soap Award for Best Single Episode at the 2004 ceremony. This was Doctors' first win at the British Soap Awards. Bakare and Timothy were also both longlisted for the British Soap Award for Best Actor for their respective roles as Ben and Mac at the same ceremony. [7]

At the 2005 British Soap Awards, Finch, who debuted in this series, won the Best Newcomer accolade for her role as Sarah. [8] Doctors was also nominated in the Soap and Continuing Drama category at the 2004 RTS Programme Awards. [9]

Doctors is a British medical soap opera, first broadcast on BBC One on 26 March 2000. Filmed in Birmingham and set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff of both an NHS doctor's surgery and a university campus surgery, as well as the lives of their families and friends. Extras is a British sitcom about extras working in television, film, and theatre. The series was co-produced by the BBC and HBO, and written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, both of whom starred in it. Natalie Joy Robb is a Scottish actress and singer. She played the roles of Gemma Clewes in EastEnders Trish McDonald in the Scottish Television soap opera Take the High Road (1990–1999) and Jude Carlyle in the BBC soap opera Doctors (2001–2004). Since 2009, she has portrayed the role of Moira Barton in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. Her other television roles include Dream Team (2000–2001) and The Bill (2004–2005).

Julia Parsons is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Diane Keen. She was introduced as the ex-wife of Mac McGuire who begins working as a receptionist at the Riverside Health Centre alongside him. She met with Doctors producers in September 2002 where she was offered the role of Julia for a three-month stint. She made her onscreen debut on 13 January 2003 and her storylines throughout her tenure see Julia get remarried to Mac, become the practice manager of the surgery and expanding their endeavours, getting accused of blowing up their surgery, a second divorce from Mac and meeting a new love interest in Martin Millar.

Mal Young, the original executive producer of Doctors, introduced nine regular characters for the series and many of the storylines focused on doctor Mac McGuire.

The second series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 2 October 2000 and 1 June 2001. It consisted of 116 episodes, a large increase on the initial 41 episodes ordered for the first series. The series saw the departures of five regulars introduced in the first series, while Eva Fontaine joined the cast as Faith Walker.

The third series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 3 September 2001 and 22 May 2002. It consisted of 129 episodes. The series saw multiple castings due to a large amount of cast exits in the previous series. These included new regulars Ariyon Bakare, Tabitha Wady, Natalie J. Robb, Tom Butcher, Nicole Arumugam and Tim Downie, amongst other recurring cast members. Wady and Arumugam departed from their roles at the conclusion of the series. The series received an average of 2.5 million viewers.

The fourth series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 2 September 2002 and 13 June 2003. It consisted of 154 episodes. An increase in episode output saw an increase in the core cast, with six regulars cast for the series: Laurence Penry-Jones, Ela Kay, Stirling Gallacher, Diane Keen, Seán Gleeson and Ben Jones. Penry-Jones and Kay departed their roles at the end of the series, as well as Tim Downie leaving midway. The series received an average of 2.5 million viewers.

The sixth series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 6 September 2004 and 6 April 2005. It consisted of 139 episodes. Unlike all previous series, no new regular characters were introduced, but instead, four new recurring cast members featured alongside the established regulars. These were: Shabana Bakhsh, Sean Arnold, Steven Hartley and Mandana Jones, all of whom departed in the series.

The seventh series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 18 April 2005 and 13 April 2006. It consisted of 185 episodes. Set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff and patients of the Mill Health Centre, a fictional NHS doctor's surgery. This was the first series of Doctors to have Will Trotter as executive producer, following the resignation of original executive producer Mal Young at the end of the previous series.

The eighth series of the British medical soap opera Doctors originally aired between 24 April 2006 and 13 April 2007. It consisted of 185 episodes. Set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff and patients of the Mill Health Centre, a fictional NHS doctor's surgery. The series saw the departure of the last remaining original cast member when Christopher Timothy quit his role as Mac McGuire. Fellow original Maggie Cronin reprised her role as Kate McGuire to aid in his exit storyline. Alongside Timothy, numerous other regulars departed in the series, which resulted in the castings of new regular cast members Donnaleigh Bailey, Stephen Boxer and Martha Howe-Douglas.

Gbemisola Ikumelo is a British actress, comedian and writer. She has won a BAFTA award for her short Brain in Gear and best female comedy performance from the Royal Television Society for her role in her show Famalam.

Black Ops is a British television comedy series made for BBC One starring Hammed Animashaun, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen. The latter two also being co-creators, writers and executive producers. The first series aired in May 2023. A second series was commissioned in August 2023.
