In this role McAneny was responsible for attack and strategic ballistic missile submarines which operated from the west coast of the United States to the Suez Canal conducting a broad array of missions in support of critical national security objectives. Rear Admiral McAneny served as commandant, National War College, National Defense University, Washington, D.C. in his final post and was previously the Commander, Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet.
