Douglas Harvey Monro Gibson (born 8 August 1942) is a South African retired attorney,politician and diplomat who served as South Africa's ambassador to Thailand between 2008 and 2012. Previously,he had served as chief whip of the opposition from 1999 to 2007,as chairperson of the federal council of the Democratic Party between 1997 and 2000,and as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa between 1994 and 2008.
In 1970 Gibson was elected to the Transvaal Provincial Council for the Benoni Constituency as a member of the United Party. [1] He went on to serve in the provincial council for sixteen years. He was also a town councillor in Benoni between 1972 and 1977. [1]
In 1975 Gibson was a member of the delegation which concluded the merger between the Reform Party (led by Harry Schwarz) and the Progressive Party (led by Colin Eglin) to form the Progressive Reform Party,and he has been a member of its successor parties ever since. [1] In 1991,he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Yeoville Constituency as a member of the Democratic Party. Gibson was also the leader of the DP in Gauteng. [1]
Gibson became a member of South Africa's first democratically elected parliament in 1994 as one of seven DP members in the National Assembly. [1] He was appointed chief whip of the DP caucus and spokesperson for Safety,Security and Justice. [1] In 1997,he was elected chair of the DP's Federal Council,succeeding Dave Gant. [1]
Gibson became Chief Whip of the Opposition following the 1999 general election,in which the DP replaced the New National Party as the official opposition to the African National Congress. [1] When parliament reconvened for the first time after the election,he nominated fellow DP MP Dene Smuts for Deputy Speaker. Smuts lost to the ANC's candidate,Baleka Mbete. [2] In 2000,the Democratic Alliance was formed out of a merger of the DP and NNP. James Selfe was then elected to lead the Democratic Alliance Federal Council.
Gibson continued to serve as chief whip until 2007,when Tony Leon stepped down as DA leader and Sandra Botha was elected to succeed him. Ian Davidson was appointed to serve as chief whip. [3] Gibson was then appointed as South Africa's ambassador to Thailand. He officially became ambassador in January 2008 and resigned his seat in the National Assembly. [4] In February 2012,his term as ambassador ended and he returned to South Africa. [5]
In April 2017,Gibson said that former DA leader Helen Zille was "past her shelf life" and urged her to retire after then-DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced that disciplinary proceedings would be taken against her for her controversial tweets on colonialism. [6]
Anthony James Leon is a South African politician who served as leader of the opposition from 1999-2007 as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He led the DA from its inception in 2000,until his retirement from leadership in 2007. Before that,he led the Democratic Party from 1994. He is the longest-serving leader of the official opposition in parliament since the advent of democracy in 1994. Although still a member of the DA,he served as the South African Ambassador to Argentina,Uruguay and Paraguay under the African National Congress government from 2009 to 2012.
Baleka Mbete is a South African politician who was the Deputy President of South Africa from September 2008 to May 2009. She was also the Speaker of the National Assembly for two non-consecutive terms from 2004 to 2008 and from 2014 to 2019. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),she was first elected to the National Assembly in 1994 and stepped down from her seat in 2019.

Albert Theo Fritz is a South African politician and advocate. He was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety for two nonconconsecutive terms from 2010 to 2011 and again from 2019 until his dismissal from the position amid sexual misconduct allegations in 2022. He was a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2010 until his resignation from the DA in 2022. He served as the interim Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape from the suspension and resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela in April 2021 until his resignation from the party in March 2022. He was also the deputy DA provincial leader 2017 to 2021. Fritz previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Social Development from 2011 to 2019. From 2009 to 2010,he was a Member of the National Assembly and the Shadow Deputy Minister of Correctional Services.
John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has served as the twentieth leader of the Opposition since October 2019 and has been the leader of the Democratic Alliance since November 2020,having served as the interim leader for one year from November 2019. He was chief whip of the official opposition from May 2014 until October 2019.
Alan Richard Winde is a South African politician and businessman. He is the 8th and current Premier of the Western Cape,having held the position since 2019. He has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999. Winde is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
The Shadow Cabinet of Mmusi Maimane was formed on 5 June 2014 in South Africa following his election as Parliamentary Leader of the Democratic Alliance and Leader of the Opposition on 29 May 2014. The Democratic Alliance parliamentary caucus also elected other caucus leadership. John Steenhuisen was elected Chief Whip with Anchen Dreyer as Caucus Chairperson. These elections all occurred following the 2014 general elections,in which the Democratic Alliance retained its post as the Official Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.
Theunis Louis "Theuns" Botha is a retired South African politician of the Democratic Alliance. Previously,he served as the Western Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health. He also served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2015. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape from 2002 to 2012. Botha was also Deputy Provincial Leader of the party from 2012 to 2015.
Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2014. He served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014. In 2012,Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance,and has been deputising Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He deputised James Selfe from 2012 to 2019. Walters was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.

Janet Audrey Semple is a retired South African politician who served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for the Democratic Alliance (DA) from 2010 to 2019. She was the Provincial Leader of the DA in Gauteng from 2010 to 2012. She previously represented the DA and Democratic Party (DP) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009.
Michael Sean Moriarty is a South African politician. He served as the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He was elected to the legislature in 2009 and resigned from it in 2021. He was also the provincial chairperson of the DA in Gauteng. Moriarty was previously a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor.

Jack Bloom is a South African politician who has been a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 1994,representing the Democratic Party from 1994 until 2003 and the Democratic Alliance from 2003 onwards. Bloom is the DA's shadow MEC for health. Bloom was the DA caucus leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the provincial legislature from December 2007 to April 2009 and again from March 2011 until May 2014.
