Drain is an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2014. Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited them as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s. [1]

History

Drain was formed in 2014, by drummer Tim Flegal and a number of other students at the University of California, Santa Cruz who played a variety of different music styles. This lineup had fractured by 2015, leading to Sammy Ciaramitaro and Cody Chavez joining the band on vocals and bass, respectively. This introduction led to the band's sound becoming increasingly indebted to hardcore punk. Soon after, Chavez instead became the band's guitarist. [2] In 2016, they released their debut EP Over Thinking, which was followed the next year by the Time Enough at Last EP. [3] The band performed at Sound and Fury festival 2019, which caught the attention of Revelation Records, who soon signed the band. [4] On February 10, 2020 they announced their debut full-length album California Cursed, and released the single "Sick One". [5] The album was subsequently released on April 10, 2020. [6] On June 19, 2021, the band performed at a guerrilla-style show which around 2000 people attended in San Jose alongside Sunami, Gulch, Scowl, Xibalba and Maya Over Eyes. [7] On August 25, 2021, they released the single "Watch You Burn". [8] At the beginning of 2023, they toured Australia supporting Comeback Kid. [9] On February 7, 2023, they announced the release of their second album Living Proof and released the single "Evil Finds Light". [10] The following day the released a music video for the single. [11] From May 25 to June 24, they headlined a US tour. [12] Between August 3 and 19, they headlined a European tour. [13]

Musical style

Critics have categorized Drain's music as hardcore punk [14] [15] and crossover thrash, [16] [17] frequently incorporating elements of punk rock and thrash metal. [18] Bandcamp Daily writer David Anthony called the band "surf-thrash". [19] The band makes use of a more fun and upbeat sound than many of their contemporaries, Kerrang! credited this to vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and his "non-threatening look and his Golden Retriever energy". [20]

Tom Breiham of Stereogum called their music "old-school California fight music, with a generous whiff of ’80s thrash-metal". [5] Alternative Press writer Huw Baines called it "a mosh-primed mix of hardcore bounce and crossover thrash chaos". [21] Exclaim! writer Connor Atkinson said that "the band's sound is both old and new—the tough street grit of New York hardcore paired with the tasteful gloss of '80s thrash metal". [22]

They have cited influences including Black Flag, Blast, [23] Dark Angel, Exhorder, Slayer, Vio-lence and Testament. [24]

Hardcore punk is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington, D.C., and New York punk rock and early proto-punk. Hardcore punk generally disavows commercialism, the established music industry and "anything similar to the characteristics of mainstream rock" and often addresses social and political topics with "confrontational, politically charged lyrics".

Thrash metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its overall aggression and fast tempo. The songs usually use fast percussive beats and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead guitar work. The lyrical subject matter often includes criticism of The Establishment, opposition to armed conflicts, and at times shares a disdain for the Christian religion with that of black metal. The language is typically direct and denunciatory, an approach borrowed from hardcore punk.

Metalcore is a fusion genre combining elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk, that originated in the late 1980s. Metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, which are slow, intense passages conducive to moshing, while other defining instrumentation includes heavy guitar riffs often utilizing percussive pedal tones and double bass drumming. Vocalists in the genre typically perform screaming, more popular bands often combine this with the use of standard singing, usually during the bridge or chorus of a song. However, the death growl is also a popular technique within the genre.

Head Wound City is an American hardcore punk supergroup consisting of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato both of The Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian, both of The Locust.

The Stains is an American hardcore punk band from the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States. One of the first East Los Angeles punk groups, the band started playing punk in 1976. Their debut album, produced by SST Records house producer Spot, was recorded in 1981, and released by SST in 1983. The debut album is often considered influential in bridging hardcore punk and heavy metal before the creation of thrash metal. The band has been on tours with Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and countless others. They were one of the bands that played at a 2001 "anniversary show" memorializing the landmark East Los Angeles punk venue, Vex Populi. The music writer Josh Kun wrote in Los Angeles magazine that their set was "punk rock enough for the Stains to leave a pool of blood on the stage's wood beams".

Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album and one demo. Their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, was their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.

However, after gaining notoriety for their violent debut live performance, the band continued past their planned time frame. They have since released three EPs, with their debut self-titled album being released on June 14, 2023. A 2023 article by Revolver credited them as "in the upper echelon of bands dominating the hardcore zeitgeist".

Gulch was an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2016. The band released only one studio album Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress (2020), as well as two EPs and one demo tape. They performed their final live performance on July 31, 2022, at the peak of their popularity. The New York Times credited them as one of the driving forces of American hardcore's "Rennaissance" in the 2020s.

High Vis is an English rock band formed in London in 2016. Formed by the members of various hardcore punk bands, the band blends the genre with other styles like post-punk, indie rock and baggy. They have released two studio albums and four EPs.
