The English and Foreign Languages University known as EFLU is a central university for English and foreign languages located in Hyderabad, India. [3] It is the only such university dedicated to languages in South Asia. [4] [5]
The university offers the study of English and foreign languages like Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Turkish in the areas of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics, Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies. [3]
EFLU, Hyderabad was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. [6] The Central Institute of English, Hyderabad had started functioning with effect from 17 November 1958. [7] It was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972 with the addition of three major foreign languages – German, Russian and French. [6] The Educational Media Research Center (EMMRC) was established at CIEFL in 1984. In 2006, CIEFL received central university status and was renamed to English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), by an act of the Parliament. [6]
This is the main campus, situated in the heart of Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. This is the oldest of the campuses of the university. The campus has 7 schools with 26 departments. Apart from graduate, postgraduate, and research programmes, EFLU also offers postgraduate diplomas, and distance and part-time mode courses.
The campus houses five hostels two for men and three for women.
The University has one main campus – at Hyderabad; and two regional centres – at Shillong (1973) and Lucknow (1979). They have their own libraries and hostel facilities. [8]
The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Shillong Campus was established in Shillong in 1973 as the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) North-East Campus, one year after Meghalaya achieved statehood. The aim of establishing this campus was to cater to the linguistic and research needs of the region as well as to provide quality training for teachers. [8]

The EFL University Campus at Lucknow was started in 1979 to provide training to university/college teachers of English in northern India, but it slowly emerged as a full-fledged Centre offering PG Diploma in the Teaching of English, degree and research programmes. The campus has been actively engaged in conducting refresher courses for university and college teachers, proficiency courses for a wide spectrum of learners and contact programmes for the participants of Postgraduate Certificate course in the Teaching of English. The campus also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication. All programmes run by the Campus are face-to-face and are not offered through the distance mode. The campus has its own library and hostel. [8]
Dedicated to the study of English and foreign languages, the university was set up to conduct advanced research and training in English and foreign languages, in areas of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics, Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies. [6]
The EFLU publishes Contextures: A Journal of Literature and Culture bi-annually. [9] It aims to contribute to the debates over literary and cultural practices from heterogeneous perspectives by bringing together several departments of literature.
The American College, often referred to as American College, is one of the oldest colleges in India, located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 1881 by American Christian missionaries. The red-brick buildings, in the Saracenic style, blend with the natural surroundings constructed by British architect Henry Irwin. Century-old buildings Main Hall, James Hall and Washburn Hall show the heritage of the college.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and founded in 1916. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College, founded by Indian Home Rule-leaguer and Theosophist, Annie Besant in 1898. After Besant and her associates were marginalised, the university was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya with the support of the maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar, formerly Regional Engineering College Jalandhar, is a public engineering university located in Jalandhar, Punjab, India established on 1987. It has been declared as an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India. It is a member of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) system, a group of premier Indian technical institutes governed by the Council of NITSER on 2002. It was founded as a joint venture between the state and the central government, originally under the name Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar, Punjab, India (RECJ). RECJ was established in 1989 by the joint venture of Govt of India and Govt of Punjab on the Land of Village Bidhipur and Village Suranussi of District Jalandhar (Punjab) on the Grand Trunk Road bye-pass.
Delhi University, formally the University of Delhi, is a collegiate research central university located in Delhi, India. Punjabi University is a collegiate state public university located in Patiala, Punjab, India. It was established on 30 April 1962 and is only the second university in the world to be named after a language, after Hebrew University of Israel. Originally it was conceived as a unitary multi-faculty teaching and research university, primarily meant for the development and enrichment of the Punjabi language and culture, but alive to the social and education requirements of the state.
Maulana Azad National Urdu University is a Central University located in the city of Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. It was named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India's first Minister of Education, a freedom fighter in India's struggle for independence, and a scholar of Islam and Urdu literature.
