The Cleveland Guardians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland. The Guardians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. Since 1994,the team has played its home games at Progressive Field. Since their establishment as a Major League franchise in 1901,the team has won 11 Central Division titles,six American League pennants,and two World Series championships. Lawrence Eugene Doby was an American professional baseball player in the Negro leagues and Major League Baseball (MLB) who was the second black player to break baseball's color barrier and the first black player in the American League. A native of Camden,South Carolina,and three-sport all-state athlete while in high school in Paterson,New Jersey,Doby accepted a basketball scholarship from Long Island University. At 17 years of age,he began his professional baseball career with the Newark Eagles as the team's second baseman. Doby joined the United States Navy during World War II. His military service complete,Doby returned to baseball in 1946,and along with teammate Monte Irvin,helped the Eagles win the Negro League World Series.
Matthew Derrick Williams,nicknamed "Matt the Bat" and "The Big Marine" is an American professional baseball manager and former third baseman who is the third base coach for the San Diego Padres. A right-handed batter,Williams played in Major League Baseball for the San Francisco Giants,Cleveland Indians,and Arizona Diamondbacks. He managed the Washington Nationals from 2014 to 2015.
Herbert Jude Score was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) player and announcer. Score pitched for the Cleveland Indians from 1955 through 1959 and the Chicago White Sox from 1960 through 1962. He was the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year in 1955,and an AL All-Star in 1955 and 1956. Due to an on-field injury that occurred in 1957,he retired early as a player in 1962.
