The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) is an organisation in India. its founding president is rohit shuklha ritu kumar and tarun tahiliani
FDCI is a non-profit [1] independent association of fashion designers formed to propagate the Business of Fashion in India in December 1998. [2] Currently, the office is based in New Delhi with Sunil Sethi as the President. [1] [3] FDCI is supported by the Indian Textile Ministry & it also works very closely with fashion institute like NIFT. [4]

In 2006, Montana World of Wearable Art(tm) (WOW) and FDCI collaborated in encouraging Indian participation in the latter's fashion show in New Zealand. [8]
The Council also collaborated with Vogue to launch the Vogue Fashion Fund in India in order to promote emerging designers. Through this project, the winner (decided by the selected jury panel) is awarded with a grand cash prize along with a chance to be featured in the India issue of the magazine. Apart from this, the winning talent also gets an opportunity to commercialise his/her brand with a leading retailer, and gain access to fashion platforms like India Fashion Week and a one-year business mentorship with an industry professional. In 2013, FDCI collaborated with the Delhi-based Cotton Council International (CCI) to start a reality show Lets Design to promote the use of cotton in the fashion arena. The winner was awarded a direct entry to India Fashion Week Spring summer edition at the young talent pool to showcase the collection along with a prize money of ten lakhs INR. [10] [11]
The Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) 2018, organized by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), showcased the latest trends from top Indian designers. The event highlighted sustainable fashion, inclusivity, and innovation. Designers like Tarun Tahiliani, Anamika Khanna, Ritu Kumar, and Rohit Bal presented their collections, blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern styles. A notable collaboration was Nida Mahmood x Deivee by Milind Soman, [12] which featured quirky designs in eco-friendly activewear. Celebrity showstoppers added glamour, and the event provided a platform for emerging designers. AIFW 2018 was a celebration of creativity and style, reflecting the diverse and vibrant Indian fashion scene.
FDCI organises the annual mega-designer sale, offering designer garments at heavy discounts. Five per cent of the sale proceeds from this event goes towards various charities like Divya Chaya Turst in Kolkata, Observation Home, Mumbai, and the relief fund of Gujarat earthquake victims to name a few. In 2003, four designers: Anju Modi, Anjana Bhargava, Puja Duggal and Ameet Sikka tied up with nine artists Jatin Das, Sudip Roy, Niren Sengupta and Jai Zharotia, among them to paint garments ranging from the traditional salwar kameez to trousers and skirts. The result was a novel collection for a charity. [14]
In 2010, the Design Council along with the organisation Khushii (Kinship for Humanitarian, Social and Holistic Intervention in India) held the ceremony of Art on Wheels on the last day of WIFW to raise funds for the NGO's global development initiative – World Action Forum (WAF) for causes like educating children, empowering village communities etc. Twelve well-known artists like Dilip Sharma, Farhad Hussain, George Martin, Hindol Brahmbhatt, Jayasri Burman, Jagannath Panda, Paresh Maity, Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Satish Gupta, Sudhanshu Sutar and Yusuf Arakkal had handpainted a limited edition autorickshaws. The autos were also auctioned at The Claridges for bidding. [15] [16] [17]
FDCI, in order to generate funds for a People for Animals (PFA) initiative entered into a design alliance with the carpet weavers to weave the creations of artists such as S.H. Raza, MF Husain and Paresh Maity along with the designs of fashion designers such as Rohit Bal, Manish Arora, JJ Valaya, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Ritu Kumar, on a museum quality carpet that can be displayed on walls or floors. The carpets bought from the exhibitions were available at a considerable cheaper price to raise funds for the (PFA) initiative. [18]
In 2012, the Fashion Council partnered with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to encourage the cause of Vegan Fashion in the country by announcing the Fashion for Freedom Boycott Bill. [19] In the same year, a significant initiative of signing a pact between the Ministry of Textiles (MOT) & Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) was also taken. [20]
Tarun Tahiliani is a noted Indian fashion designer. With his wife Sailaja 'Sal' Tahiliani, he co-founded the multi-designer boutique Ensemble in 1987, and Tahiliani Design studio in 1990. Based in Delhi, he is best known for his ability to infuse Indian craftsmanship and textile heritage with tailored silhouette. His signature is to combine traditional aesthetics with modern design. Over the years, he also became known for his bridalwear.
Natasha Suri is an Indian Actress, Supermodel, TV Host and Former Miss World India. She won the Femina Miss World India title in 2006 and further represented India at the prestigious Miss World Pageant in Poland where she placed in the top 10 in finals. She was also famed for the renowned web series Inside Edge.
Wendell Rodricks was an Indian fashion designer and author based in Colvale, Goa. He was also an activist for social causes, environment and gay rights. In 2014, the Government of India conferred upon him its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
Sustainable fashion is a term describing efforts within the fashion industry to reduce its environmental impacts, protect workers producing garments, and uphold animal welfare. Sustainability in fashion encompasses a wide range of factors, including cutting CO2 emissions, addressing overproduction, reducing pollution and waste, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring that garment workers are paid a fair wage and have safe working conditions.
India Fashion Week is a bi-annual fashion week organized and promoted by the Fashion Design Council of India. It was sponsored by Wills Lifestyle from 2006–2014 before Amazon.in became the sponsor.
Rohit Khosla was a pioneer of contemporary fashion industry in India. Khosla studied in England, worked with designers in New York, but returned to India to start his own label in 1987, along with his sister, designer Rohini Khosla.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an Indian fashion designer, jewelry designer, retailer and couturier from Kolkata, India. Since 1999, he has sold designer merchandise using the label Sabyasachi. Mukherjee is one of the Associate Designer Members of Fashion Design Council of India and the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema. He has designed costumes for Bollywood films such as Guzaarish, Baabul, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Raavan, and English Vinglish.
Kalden "Kelly" Sonam Dorji is a Bhutanese actor, model, and artist who works primarily in Indian movies.
Anamika Khanna is an Indian fashion designer who operates from her studio situated in Kolkata. She has been covered by the Business of Fashion (BOF) for being the Indian designer who has blended traditional Indian textiles and techniques with Western silhouette and tailoring. She is the first Indian designer to have an International label: "Ana mika". Her creations are sold online and offline stores across India and abroad. Before entering the fashion industry, Anamika was a classical dancer and painter.
JJ Valaya is an Indian fashion designer and couturier from New Delhi, India. He founded the House of Valaya, a luxury fashion and lifestyle house in 1992, along with his brother TJ Singh. A founding member of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and the first global brand ambassador of Crystal giant Swarovski. He has been designing for over 20 years. As a fine art photographer, he released his first book, Decoded Paradox in 2011. In the same year, he also closed the day one of the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) winter/festive 2011 where he debuted a fashion collection inspired by photography.
Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI is a bi-annual fashion week which takes place in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India& Delhi, India. Its Summer-Resort show takes place in March in Mumbai while the Winter-Festive show takes place in October in Delhi.
