Fayrouz Saad

Fayrouz Saad is an American public official and politician. She is the Executive Director of the Office of Global Michigan, [1] and was the first Director of Detroit's Office of Immigrant affairs under Mayor Mike Duggan. [2]

Before serving in that position, Saad was an Obama appointee to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where she worked on immigration reform, security issues and economic development programs in the Middle East. [3] Before her appointment at DHS, Saad worked as a Civic Engagement Coordinator for Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services' National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC). She worked for both the Kerry and Clinton campaigns in the 11th congressional district, as well as that of state representative Gino Polidori. [4]

Saad ran as a Democratic candidate for Michigan's 11th congressional district in the 2018 midterm elections, where she came in fourth place with 19.4 per cent of the votes, losing to former Obama administration chief of staff for the Auto Task Force of the U.S. Treasury Department, Haley Stevens, who obtained 27 per cent of the votes. Personal life

Saad was born and brought up in the Arab-majority community of Dearborn, Michigan, as the daughter of Lebanese immigrants who still run a small meat wholesale business in Detroit. [6] [7] In his first Eid-al-Fitr celebration in 2016, US President Barack Obama singled out Saad's parents Aref and Aida Saad for praise citing their successful retail business in Michigan "for paying it forward" by having their daughter Fayrouz Saad work as director for the Office of Immigrant Affairs of Detroit. [8] She graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in Political Science and Psychology, and in 2014 received a master's from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where she studied urban policy and economic development. [7] [9] Saad is currently married to Chris DeRusha who serves as the Federal Chief Information Security Officer of the United States at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Career

Saad's career spans campaign staffing, community organizing and immigration issues at the local, state and national levels. Between 2004-2008, Saad worked as a field organizer for John Kerry's and Gino Polidori's campaigns. [10]

Her organizing work targeted Arab American community relations, [11] voter registration, civic engagement and advocacy strategies through the National Network for Arab American Communities and the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services. [12]  Saad was Vice President of Chicago-based political advocacy firm Cambridge Global Advisors [13] where she worked with the federal government on the implementation of CVE in the Dearborn community.[ citation needed ]

During her tenure at DHS, in addition to serving as a liaison between governors, mayors and other local elected officials in the office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA), [14] she assisted the department in coordinating community relations between Arab, Muslim, Sikh, South Asian and Somali communities and their law enforcement partners on CVE initiatives. The district covers most of eastern Detroit, including downtown, and stretches west to take in portions of Oakland County, including Lawrence's home in Southfield.

Kerry Bentivolio American politician

Kerry Bentivolio is an American politician and teacher of 15 years, who is the former United States Representative for Michigan's 11th congressional district, in office from 2013 to 2015. Bentivolio, a Republican, defeated Democratic nominee Syed Taj, a physician, in the November 6, 2012 election. Bentivolio was defeated for the Republican nomination in his bid for a second term by attorney David Trott. He launched a write-in campaign for the November 2014 general election but lost again to Trott. After Trott announced he was not seeking reelection in 2018, Bentivolio again sought election in the eleventh district, but finished last in the primary. In October 2019, Bentivolio announced that he would again run for his former congressional seat against Democrat Haley Stevens.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a United States immigration policy that allows some individuals with unlawful presence in the United States after being brought to the country as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for an employment authorization document in the U.S. To be eligible for the program, recipients cannot have felonies or serious misdemeanors on their records. History of the Middle Eastern people in Metro Detroit Aspect of history

In 2004, Metro Detroit had one of the largest settlements of Middle Eastern people, including Arabs and Chaldo-Assyrians in the United States. As of 2007 about 300,000 people in Southeast Michigan traced their descent from the Middle East. Dearborn's sizeable Arab community consists largely of Lebanese people who immigrated for jobs in the auto industry in the 1920s, and of more recent Yemenis and Iraqis. In 2010 the four Metro Detroit counties had at least 200,000 people of Middle Eastern origin, excluding Jews. Bobby Ghosh of TIME said that some estimates gave much larger numbers. From 1990 to 2000 the percentage of people speaking Arabic in the home increased by 106% in Wayne County, 99.5% in Macomb County, and 41% in Oakland County.

Yemeni Americans are Americans of Yemeni ancestry. According to an estimate of 2010, more than 100,000 Yemenis live in the United States.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the 14 U.S. representatives from the state of Michigan, one from each of the state's 14 congressional districts. The elections coincided with the elections of other offices, including a gubernatorial election, other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate, and various state and local elections. The filing deadline for candidates filing for the August 7 primary was April 24, 2018. Unless otherwise indicated, the Cook Political Report has rated the congressional races as safe for the party of the incumbent.

Abolish ICE Political movement

Abolish ICE is a political movement that seeks the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The movement gained mainstream traction in June 2018 following controversy of the Trump administration family separation policy. A member of the Democratic Party, her constituency includes several communities within Oakland County, including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, and part of West Bloomfield Township.

Haley Stevens American politician

Haley Maria Stevens is an American politician from the state of Michigan. A Democrat, she is the member of the United States House of Representatives from Michigan's 11th congressional district. The district includes many of Detroit's northern and western suburbs, such as Auburn Hills, Troy, Livonia, Canton Township, Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield Township, Novi, Rochester Hills, Birmingham, and Northville.

Abraham Aiyash is an American politician and activist serving as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 4th district. The district covers much of Detroit's Midtown, New Center, North End, Boston Edison, Virginia Park, and all of the city of Hamtramck. He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Pierina Ana Sanchez is an American politician from the Bronx, New York City. Since 2022, Sanchez has represented the 13th district on the New York City Council, encompassing Kingsbridge, Fordham, University Heights, and Tremont. A Democrat, Sanchez formerly served in the mayoral office of Bill de Blasio as a policy advisor.
