Freddie Roach (born June 3, 1983) is an American football coach and former linebacker who is currently the defensive line coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Playing career

Roach was linebacker for Alabama from 2002 to 2005. After his playing days in Tuscaloosa, Roach signed as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2006. [1] However, he was cut at the end of the preseason. [2] [3]

Coaching career

Alabama

Roach's began his coaching career at University of Alabama in 2008 under Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide's assistant strength and conditioning coach. He stayed in that position until 2010 winning a national championship in 2009.

Murray State

For the 2012 season, worked as the defensive line coach for Murray State. [4]

South Alabama

For the 2013 and 2014 seasons Roach worked under Joey Jones as the defensive ends and outside linebackers coach at South Alabama. [5] [6]

Alabama (second stint)

Roach once again returned to Alabama in 2015 this time working as the team's director of player development. He stayed in that position through 2016, winning another national championship.

Ole Miss

Roach was recruited to be the defensive line coach for Ole Miss by head coach Hugh Freeze in 2017. [7] He was there for Matt Luke's entire tenure which ended after the 2019 season. [8]

Alabama (third stint)

After rumors of him going to the NFL to join Joe Judge's inaugural staff with the Giants. [9] In 2020 Roach returned to Alabama's coaching staff for a third time, [10] [11] this time as the team's defensive line coach [12] replacing Brian Baker. [13] There he won another national championship in 2020. [14] [15] On February 14, 2024, Roach was promoted to associate head coach by new head coach Kalen DeBoer. [16]

Personal life

Roach and his wife, Ashley, have four children.

The team closed the regular season at 6–6 and lost for a sixth-straight time to rival Auburn. The Tide defeated Colorado in the 2007 Independence Bowl 30–24 to finish the season at a 7–6. After an investigation by the NCAA, five wins by Alabama were vacated from the 2007 season, adjusting official NCAA records to show the Crimson Tide as having a 2–6 record for the season.

The Tide was led by head coach Mike Shula entering his fourth year at Alabama. Despite a strong 5–2 start, they finished out the season by losing four of their final five games. The team closed the regular season at 6–6 and lost for a fifth-straight time to rival Auburn. Following the loss Shula was fired as head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Kines served as interim head coach for the bowl game.

He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. He played college football at Auburn. He played high school football at J.O. Stephen Thomas Golding known as Pete Golding is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for Ole Miss.

Tosh Lupoi is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Oregon. He previously served as the defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, the defensive line and run game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2020, the defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2019 and the defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach at the University of Alabama from 2017 to 2018.

Kane Wommack is an American football coach and former player who is currently the defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama. He previously served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Indiana from 2018 to 2020 and as the head coach of South Alabama from 2021 to 2023.
