Robert Gabriel Sterling (born November 14,1970) is an American politician and elections official from the state of Georgia. He is the chief operating officer (COO) in the office of the Georgia Secretary of State. He previously served on the city council for Sandy Springs,Georgia. Sterling received widespread attention for his speech denouncing false claims of election fraud in the 2020 election.
Sterling graduated from Riverwood International Charter School in Sandy Springs, [1] and the University of Georgia. [2] He began working in Republican Party politics as a volunteer for Mack Mattingly in his unsuccessful 1986 reelection bid to the U.S. Senate. [3] He served as campaign manager for Charlie Norwood in his successful election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994. [1] In 1998,Sterling ran for the Georgia House of Representatives in District 43,facing Dorothy Felton in the Republican Party primary election. [3] Sterling lost the election. [4]
Sterling was elected to the Sandy Springs City Council,taking office in 2011. In 2017,he did not run for reelection,and instead ran for the chair's seat on the Fulton County Commission. [5] [6] He finished in third place,behind Robb Pitts and Keisha Waites,both members of the Democratic Party. [7]
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger appointed Sterling the COO of the Secretary of State's office after winning the 2018 election. [8] He became an independent contractor in November 2019,and worked to roll out the use of new voting machines purchased from Dominion Voting Systems for the 2020 Georgia state elections. [9] Sterling held a press conference in which he publicly rejected President Donald Trump's allegations of voter fraud after Joe Biden won Georgia in the 2020 United States presidential election,saying they were "all easily,provably false," [10] [11] and warned that statements by Trump and other leading Republicans would result in innocent people getting killed. Sterling testified in public hearings before the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack on June 21,2022. [13] [14] During the hearing,Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) played a recording of Sterling's remarks and asked him what had inspired them. Sterling replied that he had "lost it" after seeing a death threat against a Georgia elections worker written on Twitter by QAnon supporters spreading the same conspiracy theories about the 2020 election that Trump was espousing,and decided to speak out against such misinformation. Keisha Lance Bottoms is an American attorney and politician who served as the 60th mayor of Atlanta,Georgia,from 2018 to 2022. She was elected mayor in 2017. Before becoming mayor,she was a member of the Atlanta City Council,representing part of Southwest Atlanta. Bottoms did not run for a second term as mayor. President Joe Biden nominated Bottoms as vice chair of civic engagement and voter protection at the DNC for the 2021–2025 term. In June 2022,Bottoms joined the Biden administration as senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement where she served until February 2023. Bottoms currently serves as a member of the President's Export Council.

The 2020 United States presidential election in Georgia was held on Tuesday,November 3,2020,as part of the 2020 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. Georgia voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote,pitting the Republican Party's nominee,incumbent President Donald Trump of Florida,and running mate Vice President Mike Pence of Indiana against Democratic Party nominee,former Vice President Joe Biden of Delaware,and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris of California. After Democratic nominee Joe Biden won the 2020 United States presidential election,Republican nominee and then-incumbent president Donald Trump pursued an unprecedented effort to overturn the election,with support and assistance from his campaign,proxies,political allies,and many of his supporters. These efforts culminated in the January 6 United States Capitol attack by Trump supporters,which was widely described as an attempted coup d'état. One week later,Trump was impeached for incitement of insurrection but was acquitted by the Senate by a vote of 57–43,10 votes short of the 67 votes required to convict him.
In direct response to election changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 United States presidential election in Georgia;the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign launched numerous civil lawsuits contesting the election processes of Georgia. All of these were either dismissed or dropped.
On January 2,2021,during an hour-long conference call,then-U.S. President Donald Trump pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to change the state's election results from the 2020 presidential election. Trump had been defeated by Joe Biden in the election,but refused to accept the outcome,and made a months-long effort to overturn the results. Prior to the call to Raffensperger,Trump and his campaign spoke repeatedly to state and local officials in at least three states in which he had lost,urging them to recount votes,throw out some ballots,or replace the Democratic slate of electors with a Republican slate. Trump's call with Raffensperger was reported by The Washington Post and other media outlets the day after it took place.

A runoff election for one of Georgia's seats in the United States Senate was held on December 6,2022. The runoff was scheduled because none of the candidates for Senate received 50% of the statewide vote in the general election. In addition to the Senate seat,all of Georgia's seats in the United States House of Representatives were up for election. Also up for election were all of Georgia's executive officers and legislative seats,as well as one seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission. The Republican Party decisively won every single statewide office in Georgia except for the Federal Senate race which narrowly went Democratic in 2022.

Incumbent Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger won re-election to a second term. Raffensperger emerged as a major national figure in early January,2021 when he faced significant pressure from then-President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The party primary elections took place on May 24,with runoffs scheduled for June 21. Trump had been taped in a phone call asking Raffensperger to "find 11,780 votes," the exact number needed for Trump to carry the state.
In February 2021,Fulton County,Georgia,district attorney Fani Willis launched a criminal investigation into alleged efforts by then-president Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the certified 2020 election victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden and award the state's electoral college votes to Trump. A special grand jury recommended indictments in January 2023,followed by a grand jury that indicted Trump and 18 allies in August 2023. The charges include conspiracy,racketeering and other felonies.
The State of Georgia v. Donald J. Trump,et al. is a pending criminal case against Donald Trump,the 45th president of the United States,and 18 co-defendants. The prosecution alleges that Trump led a "criminal racketeering enterprise",in which he and all other defendants "knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome" of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in Georgia. All defendants are charged with one count of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute,which has a penalty of five to twenty years in prison. The indictment comes in the context of Trump's broader effort to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election. As of February 2024,it is one of four ongoing criminal indictments against Trump.
