Daryle Lamar Ward is an American former professional baseball first baseman and left fielder. He played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1998 to 2008 for the Houston Astros,Los Angeles Dodgers,Pittsburgh Pirates,Washington Nationals,Atlanta Braves,and Chicago Cubs. He is the son of former major leaguer Gary Ward. Daryle Ward is currently the Hitting Coach for the Chattanooga Lookouts in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Since 1970,only Tony Gwynn has won more National League batting titles (eight). Madlock is also one of only three right-handed hitters to have won multiple National League batting titles since 1960,Roberto Clemente having also won four and Tommy Davis having won back-to-back titles in 1962 and 1963.
James Leroy Thomas was an American first baseman and right fielder,coach and front-office executive in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played for six teams from 1961 to 1968,most notably the Los Angeles Angels,then went on to a successful tenure as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Traded to the Angels one month after the expansion franchise began play in 1961,he tied for third in Rookie of the Year voting after batting .285 with 24 home runs and 70 runs batted in (RBI),primarily playing in the outfield. The following year,he was named to the American League (AL) All-Star team after shifting to first base,and appeared in both All-Star games played that year as a pinch hitter and late-inning defensive replacement. He finished the year with career highs in batting (.290),home runs (26) and RBI (104),but a sharp decline in 1963 led to his being traded to the Boston Red Sox in mid-1964,the first of four trades before the 1968 season.

Richard Joseph Hebner is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball as a third baseman from 1968 through 1985,most prominently as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five National League Eastern Division titles in six years between 1970 and 1975 and won the World Series in 1971. After his playing career,Hebner spent several years as a hitting coach at the major league and minor league levels. He also managed minor league teams in the Pirates,Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles organizations.
William Derrick Bates is an American former professional baseball second baseman and pinch runner who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds. In 29 career games,Bates had a batting average of .125 with six hits,two runs batted in (RBI),11 runs,and eight stolen bases. Though his defensive position was at second base,the Reds primarily used Bates as a pinch runner. After he scored the winning run in Game 2 of the 1990 World Series,Bates never played in MLB again.

Merkle's failure to advance to second base on what should have been a game-winning hit led instead to a force play at second and a tied game. A protested game occurs in baseball when a manager believes that an umpire's decision is in violation of the official rules. In such cases,the manager can raise a protest by informing the umpires,and the game continues to be played "under protest."
