Gemma Pranita (born 18 December 1985) is a Thai-born Australian actress. Pranita was encouraged to join the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) by her drama teacher, and from 1999 to 2003, she competed at state level in the Shakespeare Globe Association's annual Shakespeare festival. Pranita formed a theatre company called Cry Havoc! with her best friend in 2006. After graduating from WAAPA, Pranita joined the Bell Shakespeare theatre company. She has also had roles in the films, Crush and Resistance. From 2010 until 2012, Pranita played Jade Mitchell in the Australian soap opera Neighbours . She briefly reprised the role in March 2019. After leaving Neighbours, Pranita appeared in The Ever After and launched a blog showcasing her career as a photographer. She also co-hosts the We Don't Have Time For This podcast.

Early life

Pranita was born Gemma Pranita Xumsai in 1985 in Bangkok, Thailand, the daughter of a Thai father and an English mother. [2] [3] [4] When she was twelve years old, Pranita and her family moved to Australia. [5] Pranita took an interest in drama, art and music at her Sydney high school and she became friends with Kate Revz. [5] [6] Pranita's drama teacher encouraged her to apply to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). [5] Pranita plays the guitar, composes music and she regularly performs in public. [5]

Career

Acting

From 1999 to 2003, Pranita competed at state level in the Shakespeare Globe Association's annual Shakespeare festival. [4] In 2002, she was invited to join the company in their National production of Loves Labors Lost as a performer and score composer. [4] Pranita and Revz formed Cry Havoc!, a theatre company, together in 2006. [6] After she graduated from WAAPA in 2007, Pranita joined the Bell Shakespeare theatre company and she toured with them for eight months. [5] She also played the lead role in Revz's short film, Hi My Name is Billy. [6] The following year, Pranita joined the cast of thriller film, Crush . [7] The film shot on location in Perth and Pranita played the role of the Nurse. [7] Pranita plays the role of the Spanish Valentina Vega in the Australian Sci-fi film, Resistance. [8]

In September 2010, a Herald Sun reporter announced Pranita would be joining the cast of Neighbours as Jade Mitchell, the younger sister of Sonya (played by Eve Morey). [9] Pranita was in Russia researching Anton Chekhov when her agent called her to audition for Neighbours. [10] The actress returned to Australia and her agent informed her that she could audition on the last day. [11] Pranita won the role and she moved to Melbourne for filming within the week. [11] Pranita initially signed a twelve-month contract with the show. [9] On 8 June 2012, Fiona Byrne of the Herald Sun reported Pranita would be departing Neighbours. [12] Pranita stated that two years was long enough to play one character and she wanted to challenge herself to do other things. [13] Pranita filmed her final scenes on 9 August. [14]

Following her departure from Neighbours, Pranita appeared in the short film Banter as Emma. [15] She then appeared alongside fellow Australian actresses Teresa Palmer and Phoebe Tonkin in The Ever After directed by Mark Webber. [16] [17] Prainta reprised her Neighbours role for a brief guest stint in March 2019. [18]

Blog, photography and podcast

Pranita started a fashion and photography blog called Gemma Peanut Gallery in 2013. [19] Pranita features posts of herself and friends, including some of Australia's starlets, from Margot Robbie to Rachael Taylor, Renee Bargh, Teresa Palmer, Phoebe Tonkin and Delta Goodrem. [19] She launched an online photography course in September 2016. [19]

Pranita co-hosts the We Don't Have Time For This podcast with her close friend Kate Reeves. The podcast covers topics relating to motherhood, fashion, careers, and relationships. [20] In 2023, Pranita and Reeves embarked on a tour with their live show titled "Can We Not Evolve?" [20]

Personal life

Pranita dated Australian actor Jai Courtney for eight years before splitting in 2013. [21]

Pranita is married to Matthew Rooney. The two were childhood friends, who became engaged after 18 months together. [19] [22] In October 2017, Pranita announced that she was expecting the couple's first child. [23] She gave birth to their daughter on 18 April 2018. [24] Pranita gave birth to their second child, a son, in 2020. [25]

Malcolm Kennedy is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, played by Benjamin McNair. Shortly after he was cast, McNair relocated to Melbourne to be closer to the studio. He admitted that it was a shock leaving his family and friends in Sydney. The older members of the cast eventually helped him feel more comfortable. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 3 October 1994, as he arrives on Ramsay Street with his parents and siblings. An early storyline for Malcolm was a romance with Danni Stark, to whom he lost his virginity. Kathryn Beck is an Australian television and theatre actress. In 2007, she played Lily Nelson in the soap opera Home and Away and the following year, she appeared in East of Everything. In 2013, Beck began appearing in Neighbours as Gemma Reeves. She joined the cast of Wentworth in 2014.

The Willis family are a fictional family from the Australian soap opera Neighbours. They were introduced by Don Battye in 1989, but left screens in 1996, before being reintroduced in 2013. The first family member to be seen on-screen was Brad Willis, who appeared in a guest capacity from October 1989, and then his sister Cody from November. She portrayed Ivy Forrester on the CBS Daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful from 2014 to 2018. Later that same year, she joined the cast of Home and Away as Chelsea Campbell.

The actor successfully auditioned for the six-week recurring role of Kyle and he made his first on screen appearance on 26 November 2008. Milligan was later asked back every couple of months to do a few weeks filming. After eighteen months of playing Kyle on a part-time basis, Milligan was given a full-time contract deal and he and his character were promoted to the regular cast. Milligan said he was ecstatic about his promotion and looked forward to developing his character further. In August 2011, Milligan had to be written out of Neighbours temporarily so he could recover from an injury he sustained off screen.

Troy Miller is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Dieter Brummer. The actor relocated to Melbourne to film his scenes and his casting was announced in March 2011. He had a seven-week guest contract. Brummer revealed that his turn in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities caught the attention of the Neighbours producers and they later offered him the role of Troy. He also stated that the part made him enjoy acting again, after being away from the industry for several years. "Episode 6188" is the 6188th episode of the Australian soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on Eleven on 22 June 2011. The episode was written by Sarah Mayberry, directed by Jonathon Dutton, and executively produced by Susan Bower. Episode 6188 revolves around Mark Brennan's departure from the soap. The storyline sees Mark tell his girlfriend, Kate Ramsay, that he is going into witness protection. He reveals that she has just 30 minutes to decide whether to stay behind in Erinsborough or leave with him. However, when she makes the choice to leave, she has trouble convincing her younger sister to come too.

Sheila Canning is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Colette Mann. The character was teased by the show's executive producer Richard Jasek in January 2012. The following month Mann's casting was announced. She had previously appeared in the soap in 1995 and 1996, temporarily taking over the role of Cheryl Stark for eight weeks. Mann made her debut screen appearance as Sheila during the episode broadcast on 3 May 2012. After taking a brief break to appear in a play, Mann was promoted to the regular cast.
