George C. James,Jr (born June 2,1960) [1] is an American lawyer and judge,who serves as a justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.
James was born in Savannah,Georgia in 1960. [2] He was raised in Sumter,South Carolina,and graduated from Wilson Hall School in 1978. [2] He completed a bachelor's degree in business administration at The Citadel in Charleston,South Carolina in 1982,and completed a J.D. degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1985. [3]
James was in private practice in South Carolina from 1985 to 2006. [3] He worked for and became a partner with his father's law firm,Richardson,James and Playerm,which subsequently merged to become Lee,Erter,Wilson,James,Holler and Smith LLC in 2000. [2]
James was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to serve as a state judge on the South Carolina Circuit Court in 2006,for the Third Circuit,which covers four counties in eastern South Carolina:Clarendon,Lee,Sumter,and Williamsburg. He was re-elected to a second term in 2012.
The South Carolina General Assembly elected James to serve as a justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court in February 2017,to fill the remaining three years of the term of Donald W. Beatty,who was elevated to chief justice. [3] The South Carolina General Assembly re-elected James to a new ten-year term on February 5,2020. [4]
James is a member of the South Carolina Supreme Court's Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. [5]

Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Carolina since a federal court order took effect on November 20,2014. Another court ruling on November 18 had ordered the state to recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. Following the 2014 ruling of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Bostic v. Schaefer,which found Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional and set precedent on every state in the circuit,one judge accepted marriage license applications from same-sex couples until the South Carolina Supreme Court,in response to a request by the Attorney General,ordered him to stop. A federal district court ruled South Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional on November 12,with implementation of that decision stayed until noon on November 20. The first same-sex wedding ceremony was held on November 19.

Costa Pleicones is an American jurist who served as the chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. He has served on the court since being elected in February 2000 to replace Justice Toal. Archie Lee Chandler was an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. He attended The Citadel,but had to miss his senior year to join the military during World War II. He settled in Darlington,South Carolina to practice law,and was elected from there to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1972. In 1976,he was made a trial court judge,a position he held until being elevated to the South Carolina Supreme Court. He was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1984 and became the chief justice in 1994. His election to be the new chief justice took place on February 23,1994. William Luther Rhodes,Jr. (1918-1986) was an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Rhodes was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1975. He was sworn in on August 14,1975,to replace Justice Lewis as an associate justice. Served in South Carolina House of Representatives from 1951 to 1960m as chairman of ways and means,and as Judge South Carolina Fourteenth Judicial Circuit from 1960 to 1975. He was reelected to a full ten-year term in 1978.
