George Latimer (born 1935) was an American politician who served as mayor of Saint Paul,Minnesota,the state's capital city,from 1976 until 1990. A member of the DFL and a labor lawyer by profession,Latimer was known for his redevelopment of St. Paul's downtown core,serving as mayor during a period when St. Paul's population was declining somewhat as some residents moved to suburban areas while the city's ethnic diversity increased as,among others,Hmong refugees from Vietnam and Laos resettled in Saint Paul.
Born in Schenectady,New York,Latimer attended Saint Michael's College and Columbia Law School and practiced law in Saint Paul from 1963 until he was elected mayor. Latimer is of Irish and Lebanese ancestry. [1]
In 1986,Latimer unsuccessfully sought the DFL nomination for governor,losing the primary to incumbent Rudy Perpich. His running mate was Arvonne Fraser,wife of Minneapolis Mayor Donald M. Fraser. Perpich went on to win the general election.
In 1987,Latimer served as a selection committee member for the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence. [2]
After his mayoral tenure,he served as dean of Hamline University's law school from 1990 to 1993 and as a special adviser to Henry Cisneros,President Bill Clinton's Housing and Urban Development secretary,from 1993 to 1995.
An expert on urban affairs and urban development,Latimer has lectured on those topics as a visiting professor of Urban Studies and Geography at Macalester College in Saint Paul since 1996.
From January 1996 to January 1998,Latimer was CEO of the National Equity Fund,which manages approximately 27,000 housing units in 35 cities and provides affordable housing for working people through use of the Low Income Tax Credit.
Latimer has now been in the business world for several years,serving since 2001 as a director of Indentix Incorporated (formerly Visionics until a merger with Indentix in 2002). Latimer served on the Harvard Kennedy School's Executive Session on Policy at Harvard University and as Regent of the University of Minnesota. He also works part-time as a labor arbitrator. [3] St Paul Central Library was renamed George Latimer Central Library in 2014 in his honor by then mayor Chris Coleman. [4]
Latimer was one of several people who delivered a eulogy at the public memorial service,held at the University of Minnesota and televised on local stations and C-SPAN,after the death of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone.
Rudolph George Perpich Sr. was an American politician and dentist who served as the governor of Minnesota from 1976 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party,he is labeled as Minnesota's 34th and 36th governor. He was also the state's only Roman Catholic governor and the only one to serve non-consecutive terms.

Spannaus was re-elected to the position twice,in 1974 and 1978,serving from 1971 to 1983. At the 1980 Democratic National Convention He won two votes for the presidential nomination In 1982,he ran for Governor of Minnesota as the DFL-endorsed candidate but lost the primary election to former DFL Governor Rudy Perpich,who went on to win the general election. Spannaus joined the Minneapolis-based law firm of Dorsey &Whitney. Spannaus married Marjorie Clarkson and had three children.

Thomas Erwin Latimer was an American politician and lawyer who served as the Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party mayor of Minneapolis from 1935 to 1937. His mayoral term coincided with a period of labor unrest in the city. Prior to that,Latimer worked as a lawyer on the freedom of the press dispute that ultimately resulted in the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Near v. Minnesota. Latimer is of no direct relation to former St. Paul mayor George Latimer.

Sara Rosalie Wahl was an American feminist,lawyer,public defender,clinical law professor,and judge and the first woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court where she served for seventeen years. Governor Perpich nominated Wahl to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1977 and Wahl won the election to the seat in a non-partisan election in 1978,defeating three male candidates. She chaired the state's Gender Bias Taskforce and Racial Bias Taskforce and led the American Bar Association's efforts to establish clinical legal education. She was a champion for the mentally ill and for displaced homemakers. She wrote 549 opinions including for the majority in holding that different penalties for crack and powder cocaine were unconstitutional in State v. Russell .

She also managed the political campaigns of her husband Donald M. Fraser during his career,from 1954 to 1979.
The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) was established in 1986 by Cambridge,Massachusetts architect Simeon Bruner. The award is named after Simeon Bruner's late father,Rudy Bruner,founder of the Bruner Foundation. According to the Bruner Foundation,the RBA was created to increase understanding of the role of architecture in the urban environment and promote discussion of what constitutes urban excellence. The award seeks to identify and honor places,rather than people,that address economic and social concerns along with urban design.
