Globalsat Group is a consortium of companies providing satellite communication services worldwide with headquarters located in the United States. [1]

Origins

Globalsat Group was founded by J. Alberto Palacios in 1999. Palacios is also the active Executive Chairman of this multi-company entity.

Satellite services

Most products and services provided by the consortium are in the field of mission-critical satellite-based communications including voice, Internet, and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) with emphasis on L band mobile satellite service (MSS) through the Iridium, Inmarsat, Globalstar and other satellite constellations. [2] Fixed-satellite service (FSS) / VSAT and system integration are also provided in some markets, as well as Inmarsat's Ka band mobile service known as Global Express (GX). [3] One of the group's largest projects as of 2022 involves a utility company in Brazil which uses mixed L-band and terrestrial cellular for redundant high availability mobile push-to-talk communications and telemetry.

Recent activities

In November 2016 LeoSat and Globalsat Group sign a strategic worldwide agreement. Leo Sat Enterprises is planning to launch a constellation of as many as 108 LEO communications satellites. Under the agreement, Global sat Group will provide market access and Leo Sat will provide infrastructure for service. J. Alberto Palacios, CEO of Global sat, will hold a seat in the representation of the group on the Leo Sat Customer Technical Advisory Committee (CT AC). The committee will advise on system configuration, product design and launch of Leo Sat's upcoming satellite constellation. [4]

In December 2016 Globalsat Group obtained a license for all Inmarsat services through its Mexican affiliate Multi SAT. This includes official authorization and landing rights for foreign satellite signals in the Ka and L bands. [5]

In March 2017 Globalsat Group has been appointed as a Tier 1 Enterprise Distribution Partner for Inmarsat Global, the mobile satellite operator. This improved status enables Globalsat Group access to upcoming Inmarsat upcoming products, direct hotlines to operations personnel for faster customer support and a higher degree of solution customization. Also in March 2017 Globalsat Group and Sky and Space Global signed an MoU towards testing and offering satellite service in Latin America. Under the agreement, the group will take part in early trials of the Sky and Space Global satellite system. The non-binding deal also involves working towards establishing a commercial agreement for providing services to end-users across Global sat Groups' multi-country footprint. [7]

In January 2018, Globalsat Group bought major shares in Peruvian connectivity provider ST 2. [8] Sky and Space Global has joined hands with Globalsat Group for the launch of nano-satellites to revolutionize the telecommunication. [9]

In January 2020 Globalsat Group, Inmarsat, and Cobham signed a multi-year contract to provide satellite communications across the Brazilian railway network operated by Rumo. This partnership is set to enhance communication efficiency and safety on Brazil's extensive rail system. In March 2023, Globalsat Group was awarded the MSUA Satellite Mobility Innovation Award in the Environment, Social, Governance, and Impact category. This recognition was for their project that extended across diverse ecological regions, providing connectivity to remote villages and aiding in accessing vital economic opportunities. [11]

In October 2023 Globalsat Group Obtains Eco-Friendly Company Certification. Its affiliate, Globalsat Colombia, obtained certification as an eco-friendly company. This certification is based on strict compliance with the standards set by ISO 14064-1:2018, which quantifies and monitors GHG emissions transparently and effectively. [12]

In November 2023, Globalsat Group partnered with Rivada to introduce Rivada's OuterNET™ in Latin America, leveraging a 600-satellite LEO constellation for an ultra-secure, low-latency network. This partnership aims to enhance connectivity in remote areas, with satellite-to-satellite laser links for resilient communication. Launches begin in 2025, with global service starting in 2026. [13]

In March 2024 Globalsat Group agreed to form a strategic alliance to create a new affiliate with a focus on IoT opportunities throughout Central America and the Caribbean. [14]

A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that relays and amplifies radio telecommunication signals via a transponder; it creates a communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on Earth. Communications satellites are used for television, telephone, radio, internet, and military applications. Many communications satellites are in geostationary orbit 22,236 miles (35,785 km) above the equator, so that the satellite appears stationary at the same point in the sky; therefore the satellite dish antennas of ground stations can be aimed permanently at that spot and do not have to move to track the satellite. Others form satellite constellations in low Earth orbit, where antennas on the ground have to follow the position of the satellites and switch between satellites frequently.

Iridium Communications Inc. is a publicly traded American company headquartered in McLean, Virginia, United States. Iridium operates the Iridium satellite constellation, a system of 75 satellites: 66 are active satellites and the remaining nine function as in-orbit spares. Iridium Satellites are used for worldwide voice and data communication from handheld satellite phones, satellite messenger communication devices and integrated transceivers, as well as for two-way satellite messaging service from supported conventional mobile phones. The nearly polar orbit and communication between satellites via inter-satellite links provide global service availability.

A satellite constellation is a group of artificial satellites working together as a system. Unlike a single satellite, a constellation can provide permanent global or near-global coverage, such that at any time everywhere on Earth at least one satellite is visible. Satellites are typically placed in sets of complementary orbital planes and connect to globally distributed ground stations. They may also use inter-satellite communication.

Globalstar, Inc. is an American satellite communications company that operates a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for satellite phone, low-speed data communications and earth observations. The Globalstar second-generation constellation consists of 25 low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites.

The Ka band is a portion of the microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum defined as frequencies in the range 26.5–40 gigahertz (GHz), i.e. wavelengths from slightly over one centimeter down to 7.5 millimeters. The band is called Ka, short for "K-above" because it is the upper part of the original NATO K band, which was split into three bands because of the presence of the atmospheric water vapor resonance peak at 22.24 GHz (1.35 cm), which made the center unusable for long range transmission. The 30/20 GHz band is used in communications satellite uplinks in either the 27.5 GHz or 31 GHz bands, and in high-resolution, close-range targeting radars aboard military airplanes. Some frequencies in this radio band are used for vehicle speed detection by law enforcement. The Kepler Mission used this frequency range to downlink the scientific data collected by the space telescope.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Satellite phone</span> Type of mobile phone

A satellite telephone, satellite phone or satphone is a type of mobile phone that connects to other phones or the telephone network by radio link through satellites orbiting the Earth instead of terrestrial cell sites, as cellphones do. Therefore, they can work in most geographic locations on the Earth's surface, as long as open sky and the line-of-sight between the phone and the satellite are provided. Depending on the architecture of a particular system, coverage may include the entire Earth or only specific regions. Satellite phones provide similar functionality to terrestrial mobile telephones; voice calling, text messaging, and low-bandwidth Internet access are supported through most systems. The advantage of a satellite phone is that it can be used in such regions where local terrestrial communication infrastructures, such as landline and cellular networks, are not available.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Broadband Global Area Network</span> Global satellite network

The Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is a global satellite network with telephony owned by Inmarsat using portable terminals. The terminals are normally used to connect a laptop computer to broadband Internet in remote locations, although as long as line-of-sight to the satellite exists, the terminal can be used anywhere. The value of BGAN terminals is that, unlike other satellite Internet services, which require bulky and heavy satellite dishes to connect, a BGAN terminal is about the size of a laptop and thus can be carried easily. The network is provided by Inmarsat and uses three geostationary satellites called I-4 to provide almost global coverage.

The Iridium satellite constellation provides L band voice and data information coverage to satellite phones, satellite messenger communication devices and integrated transceivers. Iridium Communications owns and operates the constellation, additionally selling equipment and access to its services. It was conceived by Bary Bertiger, Raymond J. Leopold and Ken Peterson in late 1987 and then developed by Motorola on a fixed-price contract from July 29, 1993, to November 1, 1998, when the system became operational and commercially available.

SwiftBroadband is an IP-based packet-switched communications network that provides a symmetric ‘always-on’ data connection of up to 650 kbit/s per channel for aircraft globally except for the polar regions, using the Inmarsat satellite constellation.

Telespazio UK Ltd. is a British space company based in Luton, Bedfordshire. Founded in 1978 by a small group of engineers at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, VEGA presently works with various space agencies, satellite operators and manufacturers around the world. It works with the European Space Agency (ESA) and ESOC in Germany, European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) in Rome, Italy, and European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Madrid, Spain.

Sky and Space Global (UK) Ltd is a British public company planning a constellation of 200 nanosatellites in equatorial Low Earth orbit for narrowband communications that it expects will cost $160 million or less to complete in total. Satellites will feature inter-satellite links and the capability to autonomously monitor and manage satellite health and the in-orbit communications network. The company has branches in the United Kingdom, Israel and Australia.

A satellite internet constellation is a constellation of artificial satellites providing satellite internet service. In particular, the term has come to refer to a new generation of very large constellations orbiting in low Earth orbit (LEO) to provide low-latency, high bandwidth (broadband) internet service. As of 2020, 63 percent of rural households worldwide lack internet access due to the infrastructure requirements of underground cables and network towers. Satellite internet constellations offer a low-cost solution for expanding coverage.
