Great Train eXpress

Great Train eXpress (GTX) is a higher-speed commuter rail network in the Seoul Capital Area project consisting of three separate lines, named GTX-A, GTX-B and GTX-C, and scheduled for completion in 2030.^[1] Three other lines, named GTX-D, GTX-E and GTX-F are being planned.^[2]

GTX-A

Groundbreaking for GTX Line A was held on December 27, 2018, with service initially expected to commence in 2023.^[3] However, the project has been officially delayed due to land compensation issues and the discovery of archaeological ruins dating from the Joseon period.^[4] Suseo, Seongnam, and Dongtan stations were opened on March 30, 2024, and Guseong Station is scheduled to open on June 29, 2024.^[5]^[6] The northern section of the line is anticipated to open late 2024 with the connection between Seoul Station and Suseo opening at the end of 2026.^[7]^[8] Samseong Station has been further delayed and will remain closed until 2028, even after the rest of GTX-A opens.^[9] Approximately 30 kilometers of the line are expected to share the same rail as the SRT, and an additional 9 kilometers towards the western end of the route are expected to be completely underground.^[10]

Construction of GTX Line B commenced on March 7, 2024. It is planned to be completed by 2030.^[11]

GTX-C

Construction of GTX Line C commenced on January 25, 2024. It is planned to be completed by 2028.^[12] According to the latest plans and following the selection of a preferred bidder for the construction of this line, 2 additional stations, Indeogwon Station and Wangsimni Station are likely to be added to the line.

Additional plans for GTX-D, GTX-E and GTX-F

Plans for a Line D were announced in 2021 by the previous government. However, the proposed route faced a lot of opposition, and has not been approved yet. The new government of Yoon Seok-youl has pledged to build 3 new lines (Lines D, E and F), for which the routes have not been decided yet, but which would likely include plans for a longer Line D than the one announced by the previous government.

Criticism

Critics argue that GTX project would increase the social and economic centripetal force towards Seoul leading to increased primacy and the collapse of other provincial cities.^[13]

Yeongdeungpo District is an administrative district in southwest Seoul, South Korea. Although the origin of the name is uncertain, the first two syllables are thought to be from "yeongdeung" (靈登) or "divine ascent", a shamanic rite. The third syllable is "po", representing the bank of a river (浦), referring to the district's position on the Han River. The 2006 population was 408,819.

AREX is a South Korean airport rail link and commuter rail line that links Incheon International Airport with Seoul Station via Gimpo International Airport.

Sindorim station is a station on Seoul Subway Line 1 and Line 2 (underground). It is also the southeastern terminus of Line 2's Sinjeong Branch to Kkachisan. The station is located at the northern edge of Sindorim-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul, on the border with Yeongdeungpo-gu.

SuseoStation is a railroad station on the Suin–Bundang Line and Line 3 of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The station is in the Suseo neighborhood of the Gangnam District in Seoul, South Korea. Prior to the Line 3 extension to Ogeum station in 2010, Suseo Station was the southeastern terminus of Line 3. Along with Yangjae station, Suseo Station serves as an important transfer point between Line 3 and buses from/to southern cities such as Seongnam, Yongin, and Suwon.

Incheon Station is the western terminus railway station of the Suin–Bundang and Gyeongin lines of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. The station is in the Bukseong neighborhood of the Jung District in Incheon, South Korea and is approximately 20 kilometers west of Seoul. Established in 1899 under the Korean Empire as Chemulpo Station, Incheon Station is the oldest train station in the Seoul Capital Area. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, the station was briefly named Hainchon Station and the original station building was destroyed during the Korean War. Service for the old Suin Line began in 1937 and ended in 1995; the new Suin Line was extended to the station in 2016. Service for the Gyeongin Line began in 1974.

The Gyeongbu high-speed railway, also known as Gyeongbu HSR, is South Korea's first high-speed rail line from Seoul to Busan. KTX high-speed trains operate three sections of the line: on 1 April 2004, the first between a junction near Geumcheon-gu Office station, Seoul and a junction at Daejeonjochajang station north of Daejeon, and a second between a junction at Okcheon station, southeast of Daejeon, and a junction near Jicheon station, north of Daegu entered service; then on 1 November 2010, the third section, between a junction west of Daegu and Busan became operational. The missing gaps across the urban areas of Daejeon and Daegu were in construction for an expected opening in 2014, separate tracks into Seoul Station were also planned. The temporary ends of the three sections were connected to the parallel conventional Gyeongbu Line by tracks that will serve as interconnector branches upon the completion of the entire line. On 1 August 2015, construction on urban areas of Daejeon and Daegu were completed; all the sections of HSR line were connected.

Jin Air Co., Ltd. is a South Korean low-cost airline. As of April 2018 it operates flights to six domestic cities and 26 international destinations. It launched its first long haul route, between Incheon and Honolulu, in December 2015. It has operated cargo services since November 2013. Jin Air is the first widebody LCC operator in Korea.

Eastar Jet is a South Korean low-cost airline with its headquarters in Banghwa-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. On January 7, 2009, Eastar Jet made its maiden flight from Gimpo International Airport to Jeju International Airport. Now, the airline operates a scheduled passenger network to 14 destinations in eight countries. Its main base is Gimpo International Airport, with a hub at Jeju International Airport.

The Wolmi Sea Train (월미바다열차), formerly known as Wolmi Galaxy Rail, is a monorail on the island of Wolmido in Incheon, South Korea. The monorail line has 4 stations and covers 6.1 km connecting Wolmido Island to Incheon Station, the west terminus of Seoul Subway Line 1 and the Suin Line. 1.15 km is double-tracked, but the loop around Wolmido (3.94 km) is single-track. Phase 2, if built, would have added 2 km single track connecting to Dong-Incheon station, also on Metro Line 1, with a potential Phase 3 looping back to Incheon station. The system is the first in the world to use Urbanaut technology, whose selling point is an inverse T-shaped track: large wheels run on the horizontal part of the track, while small wheels press against the rail and keep it in place.

The Incheon Airport Maglev was a maglev line in South Korea that opened on 3 February 2016 and closed on 1 September 2023. It was the world's second commercially operating unmanned urban maglev line after Japan's Linimo. The trains were lighter, cutting construction costs in half. The majority of construction was completed by November 2012.

The Super Rapid Train, often known as SRT, is a high-speed rail service operated by SR Corporation. The service starts at Suseo station in southeast Seoul and terminates at either Busan station or Mokpo station.

High-speed rail service in South Korea began with the construction of a high-speed line from Seoul to Busan in 1992, and was inspired by Japan's Shinkansen. The first commercial high-speed rail service was launched on 1 April 2004. Currently, South Korea hosts two high-speed rail operators: Korea Train eXpress (KTX) and Super Rapid Train (SRT).

The Sillim Line is a light metro which is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. It opened on May 28, 2022.

The Gyeongui–Jungang Line is a commuter rail service of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system, operating on trackage from the Gyeongui Line and the Jungang Line.

Baegot New Town is an under-construction planned community in the vicinity of Incheon and Songdo International City in Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Nearly twice the area of Yeouido [island in the Han river] in area, it is considered the nation's largest town development undertaking since 2000. Seoul National University Siheung Campus is to be located here.

The Suin–Bundang Line is a commuter rail service of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system, operating on trackage from the Suin Line and the Bundang Line. Operation began on September 12, 2020.

Seodaegu Station is a new railway station on the Gyeongbu high-speed railway newly established in Ihyeon-dong, Seo District, Daegu, South Korea. This station was opened on March 31, 2022.
