Nestor Gregory Carter, professionally known as Greg Carter, is a filmmaker [1] [2] from Texas who has produced more than nineteen feature films and documentaries, nine of which he directed and six he wrote. He is a native of Houston. Carter has been inducted into the Texas Filmmakers' Hall of Fame in 2006, [3] in recognition of his film and community contributions.

Early life

Carter initially studied film while pursuing a degree in Engineering from Texas A&M University, where he studied under Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Charles Gordone. [2] After graduating, Carter went on to further his education at Rice University's Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts. He is the brother of influential cloud rapper Viper, who also starred in his first film, Fifth Ward.

Career

Carter filmed his first feature, Fifth Ward , in 1997. [3] He co-produced the 2012 film Dysfunctional Friends . He is the producer of The Concerto, a film that stars Janel Parrish ( Pretty Little Liars ) and Jackson Rathbone ( Twilight ), among others. Lap Dance , Carter's latest directorial effort, is based on events in the lives of him and his girlfriend, actress Junie Hoang prior to their move to Los Angeles in 2005. Lap Dance was written, directed and co-produced by Carter. As of August 2014, Carter is working on the feature length documentary Michael Vick: Giving Back.

Occasionally, Carter teaches filmmaking. For instance to underprivileged youths, through his association with SWAMP. [4] He founded Fifth Ward Young Filmmakers [5] in 1992, and he and producer Elizabeth Avellán participated in a youth filmmaker instruction program at the MFAH.

Awards

Carter received various awards. [3] For his film Fifth Ward (Best Director and Best Film; 30th Parallel Film Festival), Resurrection: The J.R. Richard Story (Best Feature; WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival) [6] and Waters Rising (Best Docudrama; San Diego Black Film Festival). [7]

<i>Labou</i> 2008 film

Labou is a 2008 American independent adventure film written and directed by Greg Aronowitz, based on a story by Aronowitz and producer Sheri Bryant. It was released by MGM on May 19, 2009. Greg Aronowitz was heavily involved with Power Rangers S.P.D. and directed many of the episodes. Many of the same actors that appeared in that season of Power Rangers are also seen in Labou, including Chris Violette, Kelson Henderson, Barnie Duncan and Monica May. The film has received three prestigious awards including Best of Fest at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival, Best Family Feature at WorldFest 2008 Houston, and Best Feature at Bam Kids Film Festival in NY; and has also been approved by the Dove Foundation, KidsFirst!, and NAPPA.

Self Medicated is a 2005 American teen drama film written, directed by and starring Monty Lapica. Based on actual events in Lapica's life, the film is about a troubled teenager whose mother has him kidnapped at age 17 by a private company and forcibly committed to a locked-down psychiatric institute. Lapica was not originally going to star in the film. According to the subsequent documentary, The Making of Self-Medicated (2007), he did so after casting calls failed to produce a suitable candidate.

5th Ward The Series is an American television drama series written, produced, and created by director Greg Carter and premiered on Urban Movie Channel on March 2, 2018. The series is based on director Greg Carter's first movie Fifth Ward (1997). It is centered around the life of Mina, a single mother of two struggling to make ends meet; as well as several additional locals and town officials residing in the historical district of Houston's Fifth Ward and serves as a prequel with season one consisting of six episodes airing weekly. It stars Carl Anthony Payne and Mýa with a feature ensemble cast of Brittany Bullock, Corr Kendricks, Nephew Tommy, Christopher Jefferson, Chris O'Neal, Gary Sturgis and Lew Temple. 5th Ward The Series along with other UMC's original series had a preview screening at the 26th Annual Pan African Film Festival on February 10, 2018. The series was renewed for a second season which premiered on July 30, 2020.

One Night is a 2009 Canadian short domestic drama film directed by Shelagh Carter, as a result of her participation in a workshop at the Director's Lab at the Canadian Film Centre. Carter's fourth film stars Jonathan Ralston and Jennifer Dale, and was screened at many international film festivals, winning three awards.

Fifth Ward is a 1997 drama film written, directed and produced by Greg Carter and starring Kory Washington, Thomas Miles, Donna Wilkerson, Thomas Webb, Junie Hoang, and Lee Carter. It follows an African-American man in the Fifth Ward ghetto of Houston entering a life of crime for a chance to kill the man who killed his brother. Fifth Ward was Greg Carter's first feature film which he wrote, produced, edited, and shot on 35mm.

Ben's at Home is a 2014 Canadian romantic comedy film, directed by Mars Horodyski. The film stars Dan Abramovici as Ben, a man who responds to an emotional breakup on the eve of his 30th birthday by rearranging his life so that he will never have to leave his apartment again, only to have his desire to live as a hermit challenged when he and Jess, a regular driver for his food delivery service, develop a romantic interest in each other.
