HC Kaunas City is a professional ice hockey team located in Kaunas, Lithuania, which plays in the Latvian Hockey Higher League, the top tier of ice hockey in Latvia. The team plays its home games at Kaunas Ice Arena.

History

Kaunas City was founded in 2021 after the demise of Baltų Ainiai Kaunas and Kaunas Hockey teams. [1] In the 2021–22 Lithuania Hockey League season, its debut season, the team finished in third place. [2] For the 2022–23 season, Kaunas City, along with Energija Elektrėnai and Hockey Punks Vilnius, joined the Latvian Hockey Higher League. [3] [4] In the regular season the team finished in third place and in the playoffs were eliminated 3–2 by Dinamo Riga in the quarterfinals. [5] After its elimination from the playoffs, Kaunas City played a best-of-five series against Energija Elektrėnai for Lithuania Hockey League championship, [6] winning the series in three games, [7] and also qualifying for the 2023–24 IIHF Continental Cup. [8] [9]

The Lietuvos krepšinio lyga (LKL) Finals is the championship finals series for the top-tier level professional club basketball league in Lithuania, the LKL, and the conclusion of the league's postseason. The Finals have been played in either a best-of-seven, or a best-of five format. The first LKL Finals series was held in 1994, and was contested by Žalgiris and Atletas, with Žalgiris winning the series 3–1.

The Lithuanian Ice Hockey Federation, also known as Hockey Lietuva (LLRF), is the governing body that oversees ice hockey in Lithuania. Lithuania had first joined the International Ice Hockey Federation on February 19, 1938, but was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. The nation re-joined the IIHF on May 6, 1992, along with Estonia and Latvia.

The 2010–11 Lithuanian Hockey League season was the 20th season of the Lithuanian Hockey League. Sporto Centras Elektrenai won the championship for the second season in a row. The league was divided into A and B divisions. 10 teams participated in the A Division, and 17 teams played in the B Division. Bizonai Kaunas won the B Division.
