He played in MLB for 19 seasons,most notably with the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his Dodgers tenure,he was a two-time All-Star,won two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove Award,and became the first NLCS MVP,which he received during the 1977 National League Championship Series. The series was won by the Mets,four games to two,culminating with their 7–6,16-inning triumph at the Astrodome in Game 6. New York then defeated the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series,four games to three.

With the Pirates,he won the 1979 World Series over the Baltimore Orioles. He was manager of the Astros from July 14,2004 to August 27,2007,leading Houston to a World Series appearance in 2005.

Trembley has been the bench coach for the Houston Astros and a manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Before managing the Orioles,Trembley was a minor league manager for twenty seasons,compiling a 1,369–1,413 record. He won two league titles and earned Manager of the Year awards in three leagues. In December 2001,Baseball America selected him as one of minor league baseball's top five managers of the previous 20 years. He served as a coach in the inaugural Futures Game in 1999 and also served as manager for the Southern League and Double-A All-Star Games that season. Trembley has worked for the Baltimore Orioles,Chicago Cubs,Pittsburgh Pirates,San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves.

He appeared in eight games and enjoyed early success before faltering and being sent down to the minors. He would never again pitch in the big leagues. The Astros would go on to win the 1986 National League Western Division title without him.
