Hanner Fieldhouse

Hanner Fieldhouse is a 4,325-seat^[1] multi-purpose arena in Statesboro in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was built in 1969 and is home to the Georgia Southern University men's basketball, women's basketball and women's volleyball teams. It hosted the 1985 and 1992 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball tournaments.

In addition to athletic events, Hanner Fieldhouse also is home to the university's fall commencement ceremonies and featured an election rally by then-president George W. Bush in 2006. In 2007, the university held three separate ceremonies at the facility to accommodate the university's growing number of graduates. The older Hanner Gymnasium, which is part of the newer complex, hosted a Rolling Stones concert on May 4, 1965.

On July 21, 2014, the university announced that Hanner Fieldhouse was closed until further notice for construction and more information would be provided as the details became available. In October, 2014 the Fieldhouse reopened after minor renovations and held the university's 23rd-annual fall commencement.

New arena

In February 2021, Georgia Southern unveiled plans for a new convocation center in the university's "South Campus" expansion to replace Hanner Fieldhouse. The arena will be named the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, after the late Jack and Ruth Ann Hill, both of whom were Georgia Southern alumni.^[2] Natives of nearby Reidsville, Jack Hill was a long-serving state senator whose district included Statesboro and Bulloch County, and Ruth Ann Hill was a career educator, retiring as principal of Reidsville Elementary School. The convocation center is expected to cost $64.4 million and seat 5,500 people for basketball games and up to 5,900 for convocation, commencement, and other events.^[3] Groundbreaking for the new convocation center took place on May 26, 2022, and the center is projected to open in the spring of 2024. The future of Hanner Fieldhouse beyond the 2023-2024 season is unknown. ^[4]

The 1970 NCAA College Division basketball tournament involved 32 schools playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men's NCAA College Division college basketball as a culmination of the 1969-70 NCAA College Division men's basketball season. It was won by the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science and Tennessee State's Ted McClain was the Most Outstanding Player.

Jack S. Hill was an American politician. A member of the Republican Party, he represented Georgia's 4th District in the Georgia State Senate. At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving Georgia State Senator.

The Georgia Southern Eagles women's basketball team is the basketball team that represents Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Sun Belt Conference and holds matches at Hanner Fieldhouse.

The 2016–17 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by fourth-year head coach Mark Byington, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 18–18, 11–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in a three-way tie for third place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament to Troy. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational where they lost in the first round to Utah Valley.

The 2017–18 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by fifth-year head coach Mark Byington, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 21–12, 11–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in third place. They defeated Louisiana–Monroe in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament before losing in the semifinals to Georgia State. Despite having 21 wins, they did not participate in a postseason tournament.

The Eagles, led by sixth-year head coach Mark Byington, play their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 21–12, 12-6 in Sun Belt play to finish in a 3-way tie for second place. They defeated Louisiana–Monroe in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament before losing in the semifinals to UT Arlington. Despite having 21 wins, they did not participate in a postseason tournament.

The 2019–20 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by seventh-year head coach Mark Byington, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 20–13, 12–8 in Sun Belt play to finish in a tie for fourth place. They were the No. 5 seed in the Sun Belt tournament, where they defeated Louisiana and Georgia State. However, the tournament was later cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020–21 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by first-year head coach Brian Burg, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. With the creation of divisions to cut down on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the East Division.

The Eagles, led by 10th-year head coach Frank Kerns, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference. The team won the regular season conference title and the TAAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As the No. 15 seed in the Southeast region, the Eagles lost in the opening round to Oklahoma State, 100–73, to finish with a 25–6 record.

The 1982–83 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University during the 1982–83 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by first year head coach Frank Kerns, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference. The team finished third in the regular season conference standings and won the TAAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament – the first appearance in program history. As one of two No. 12 seeds in the Mideast region, the Eagles lost in the Play-in round to Robert Morris, 64–54 to finish with a 18–12 record.

The 1986–87 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University during the 1986–87 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by fifth year head coach Frank Kerns, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Trans America Athletic Conference. The team finished fourth in the regular season conference standings and won the TAAC tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The 2022–23 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by second-year head coach Brian Burg, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 17–16, 9–9 in Sun Belt play to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place. As the No. 7 seed in the Sun Belt tournament, they defeated Louisiana–Monroe in the second round before losing to Louisiana in the quarterfinals.

The 2023–24 Georgia Southern Eagles men's basketball team represented Georgia Southern University in the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by first-year head coach Charlie Henry, played their home games at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia as members of the Sun Belt Conference.
