Ikare is a town in the northern senatorial part of Ondo State, Nigeria.

Ìkàré-Àkókó (Ikare for short), town in southwestern Nigeria, is located in the Northern Senatorial District of Ondo State.[ citation needed ] Ikare is about 100 km from Akure, the Ondo State capital. The city was the divisional headquarters of the old Akoko Division, comprising Oka-Akoko, Isua-Akoko, Okeagbe-Akoko, Ugbe Akoko etc. Based on the Local Government System now practised in Nigeria, the city is currently the headquarters of Akoko North-East Local Government. The city is a trading area for farmers of Kolanut,Cocoa, and coffee.[ citation needed ]

Ikare shares boundaries with Arigidi, Ugbe Akoko, Ogbagi, Oka, Akungba and Supare Akoko .

Osele market is the Ikare's biggest communal market where the city's ancient traditions are displayed, Ikare-Akoko. Oja Oba is situated in opposite old first Bank, garage Ikare akoko. The city is located in the Yoruba cultural region and has a substantial Christian, Jehovah Witness and Muslim population with several Churches, worshiping halls and Mosques. The architectural style of the city incorporates both Portuguese and Arabic styles.[ citation needed ] The Portuguese style was introduced in the 16th century when Portugal began to export slaves from the region. [1] Arabic influences were incorporated in the 19th century with the diffusion of Islamic culture Southward across the Sahara.[ citation needed ]Population as of 2006 was over 700,000.[ citation needed ]

Ikare has been using electricity since the year 1956.

Education

Ikare is home to several educational institutions in Ondo State. Notable among which are; Agolo High School, Odo, Ikare, Mount Carmel Secondary School, Ondo State College of Art and Science {now Federal Science and Technical College, Okegbe quarters, Ikare}; Ansar Ud-Deen Grammar School (AUD) Ikare Akoko, Agbaode Orimolade Grammar school Ikare; Osele High School Ikare Akoko, Victory College Ikare; Lennon Jubilee High School Ikare; Ikare Grammar School Ikare Akoko, Everlasting Premier College Ikare Akoko, Citadel International College, Ikare; Comprehensive high School, Ikare; Greater Tomorrow Primary School and so many government and private-owned Primary and Secondary Schools. Ikare sons and daughters are well educated and are presently holding national and international positions.

Markets

Ikare is a chief commercial city in Ondo state with several industrial base and markets which include; Osele Market, Okore Market, Oja Owa, Oja Oba, Jubilee Market, Oja Kajola Oja Kowode and several other markets in adjoining Villages. It is a super city for successful transportation business especially by private individuals.

Inter ethnic relationships

Ikare though basically a Yoruba ethnic city, is also a place of convergence in Ondo State for many ethnic groups in Nigeria including the Igbo, Hausa, Fulani, and Ijaw. The friendly disposition of its natives to visitors and holiday makers, from time immemorial, is perhaps responsible for the growing number of settlers in the city.

Out of the present 18 Local Government Councils it constitutes four; Akoko North-East, Akoko North-West, Akoko South-East and Akoko South-West, as well as the Akoko Edo LGA of Edo State. Akoko Edo is a Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Igarra. It has an area of 1,371 km2 and a population of 262,110 at the 2006 census. The earliest settlers of Akoko Edo were the Benins who would have been there the same period the Etsako people moved from Benin during the reign of Oba Ozolua (1483-1504). Akungba is a town in Ondo State located in southwestern Nigeria. The town is situated close to Ikare-Akoko. The people of Akungba had occupied their current abode about a century ago, and were under the control of Owo before the entire Akoko land of Ondo State united. The town was not popular and scarcely populated before the advent of Adekunle Ajasin University, formally Ondo State University in the year 1999.

The Ekiti people are one of the largest historical subgroups of the larger Yoruba people of West Africa, located in Nigeria. They are classified as a Central Yoruba group, alongside the Ijesha, Igbomina, Yagba and Ifes. Akogun Olugbenga Akinola Omole, is a Nigerian politician, legislator, football administrator and farmer. He is the chairman of Akogun Farms Nigeria Limited and currently represents Akoko South West Constituency I in the Ondo State House of Assembly.

Ariginya Festival is a commonly celebrated festival celebrated in one of the Ondo State town called Ikare Akoko. Depending on the dialect and mode of pronunciation, some call it Aringinya. This festival is said to be one of the foremost traditional festival celebrated in this town from inception. Ikare-Akoko is one of the town located in the southwest region of Nigeria, and in the Yoruba area. The festival is one out of many festivals that is set to celebrate the virginity and chastity among female genders as the Yoruba land is known for her worth and high value pertaining to decency and purity. The festival is such that helps to improve the mindset of dignity and purity as well as the value of a woman staying pure and reserved until the wedding and only to her husband. This has helped to improve the rate of decency in the town as young girls understands the price and the worth and that one of the greatest virtue of a woman is her virginity and a media to stand against sexual abuse and harassment

Ugbe Akoko is a town in Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria, about 105 km from the state's capital city Akure. Traditionally, the town has a ruling monarch.
