Inktank Storage was the lead development contributor and financial sponsor company behind the open source Ceph distributed file system. [2] Inktank was founded by Sage Weil and Bryan Bogensberger and initially funded by DreamHost, [3] Citrix [4] and Mark Shuttleworth. [5]

History

Inktank was created to offer professional services and support for the open source Ceph storage system. CTO and founder Sage Weil started the open source Ceph project in 2004 for his doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Santa Cruz. [7] In August 2012, Inktank joined the Linux Foundation to further open source technologies such as Ceph. [8] In September 2012, Mark Shuttleworth invested 1 million dollars to help support the progression of Ceph.

In July 2012, Inktank was listed in the Infostor 6 Storage Startups to Watch [9] and was listed in CRN The 10 Coolest Storage Startups of 2012. [10] In May 2012, Inktank was listed in CRN 10 Hot Emerging Vendors. [11]

Gluster Inc. was a software company that provided an open source platform for scale-out public and private cloud storage. The company was privately funded and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, with an engineering center in Bangalore, India. Gluster was funded by Nexus Venture Partners and Index Ventures. Gluster was acquired by Red Hat on October 7, 2011.

Ceph is a free and open-source software-defined storage platform that provides object storage, block storage, and file storage built on a common distributed cluster foundation. Ceph provides completely distributed operation without a single point of failure and scalability to the exabyte level, and is freely available. Since version 12 (Luminous), Ceph does not rely on any other, conventional filesystem and directly manages HDDs and SSDs with its own storage backend BlueStore and can expose a POSIX filesystem.
