The International College of Dentists (ICD) was conceived in 1920 at a farewell party in Tokyo for Dr. Louis Ottofy when he was returning home to the United States after practicing dentistry in the Philippines and Japan for 23 years. A colleague, Dr. Tsurukichi Okumura, a Japanese dentist, and Dr. Ottofy had the idea of forming an international dental organization. [1]
Six years later, at the Seventh International Dental Congress in Philadelphia, U.S. a group of dentists met again to finalize the concept of the ICD. [2] On New Year's Eve of 1927, the College was announced with Drs. Ottofy and Okumura as the co-founders. [3] The first President of the College was Andres O. Weber, from Havana, Cuba. [4]
Initially, 250 dentists from 162 countries accepted the Fellowship oath. The group was selected based on an international reputation and participation in the FDI World Dental Federation. Each Fellow was given the task of nominating other dentists for membership. [4]
In the years following the initial formation of the ICD, membership grew to the point where autonomous 'Sections' were required. In 1934, the first of these sections, located in the United States of America, [5] was formed. More autonomous sections were formed in the ensuing years: Section II, Canada; Section III, Mexico; Section IV, South America, Section V, Europe; Section VI, India; Section VII, Japan; Section VIII, Australasia; Section IX, Philippines, Section X, Middle East; Section XI, Korea; Section XII, Taiwan; Section XIII, China, Section XIV, Myanmar; and Section XV. Section XX comprises regions around the world that are currently too small to be sections. [6] Today, the organization claims a membership of over 12,000 (2024) from 140 countries. [7]
The organisation is led by an elected International Council and an Executive Committee. There are international standing and ad hoc committees, and 'Sections' (mostly based on countries) and 'Regions' (smaller areas) that largely manage their activities autonomously. [8] [9]
Dentists who are inducted into the ICD place the post-nominals FICD with their name. Fellowship in the International College of Dentists is extended by invitation only. A nominated dentist must pass a peer-review process leading to the recognition of the individual’s “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service, and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind". [10]
The ICD has a number of foundations which carry out both educational and humanitarian projects, and there is a college-wide fund called the Global Visionary Fund (GVF), which is the charitable arm of the ICD International Council. [11] Its initiatives in fundraising and programming allow ICD to achieve its social mission of providing oral health care for the underserved as well as the delivery of educational programs where they are most needed. The College also collaborates with other foundations, charitable groups, and partners to extend its reach. [1] [12] The ICD has a long-term partnership with dental supplies and products giant Henry Schein through the company's charitable foundation, Henry Schein Cares. [13]

The organization lobbies on behalf of the American dental profession and provides dental accreditation.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) is a professional organisation of surgeons. The RCSEd has five faculties, covering a broad spectrum of surgical, dental, and other medical and healthcare specialities. Its main campus is located on Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, centred around the 18th century Surgeons' Hall. The campus includes Surgeons' Hall Museums, a medical and surgical library, a skills laboratory, a symposium hall, administrative offices and a hotel. There is a long history of women in dentistry. Women are depicted as assistant dentists in the middle ages. Prior to the 19th century, dentistry was largely not yet a clearly defined and regulated profession with formal educational requirements. Individual female dentists are known from the 18th century. When the profession was regulated in the 19th century, it took a while before women achieved the formal education and permission to engage in dentistry.
Gillette Hayden (1880-1929) was a pioneering dentist and periodontist in the early 20th century. She was a founder of the American Academy of Periodontology and served as the first female President of the organization in 1916.
Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed was an Indian dentist, educator and later minister in the West Bengal cabinet, who founded the first dental college of India, Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, later named 'The Calcutta Dental College', where he remained its principal until 1950. He established the Indian Dental Journal in 1925, and played a key role in founding the Bengal Dentist Act in 1939. In 1946, he established The Bengal Dental Association which was then renamed as the Indian Dental Association. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1964.Remembered as the father of modern dentistry in India, in 2016, the Indian Dental Association declared 24 December as National Dentist's Day in his honour.
Andrew Howard Eric Eder is foundation dean and emeritus professor of restorative dentistry at the University of Buckingham Dental Institute and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry at Milton Keynes University Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Emeritus Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
Elaine C. Wagner is a retired United States Navy rear admiral. She was the first female pediatric dentist to achieve flag rank in the United States Navy, and served as the 36th Chief of the United States Navy Dental Corps. Her retirement ceremony was held on January 9, 2017, and she was transferred to the retired list the following April, after 33 years of service in the United States Navy. She is a member of the International College of Dentists.
Stephen Michael Pachuta is a retired United States Navy rear admiral. He served as the 37th Chief of the United States Navy Dental Corps. Pachuta retired from the Navy in December 2017, after 32 years of military service. He currently serves as Dean of his alma mater, the West Virginia University School of Dentistry.
Richard Glenn Shaffer was a rear admiral in the United States Navy and served as the 28th Chief of the United States Navy Dental Corps. He was the first Navy dentist to command a major military medical command.

Otto Ulysses King (1873-1951) was an American dentist from Huntington, Indiana and the first General Secretary and Editor of the American Dental Association in 1913-1927. In 1920, King Co-founded the American College of Dentists after returning from World War I where he served as a member on the Committee on Dentistry for the Council of National Defense. He also founded the Journal of the American Dental Association, which at the time of founding was called Official Bulletin of the National Dental Association.
