Isaac Rex (born August 4, 1998) is an American football tight end. He played college football at BYU.

Early life and high school

Rex attended high school at San Clemente. He was a 2 sport standout and received honors and college attention for both football and basketball. He was San Clemente’s Athlete of the Year. Coming out of high school, Rex was rated as a three-star recruit where he held offers from schools such as BYU, Oregon State, Utah, and Utah State. [1] Ultimitly, Rex decided to commit to play college football for the BYU Cougars. [2] [3]

College career

During the 2019 season, Rex decided to redshirt where he played in three games making one catch for 23 yards. [4] During the 2020 season, Rex hauled in 37 receptions for 429 yards and 12 touchdowns. [5] For his performance on the season, Rex was named a Freshman All-American. [6] [7] In the 2021 season, Rex totaled 18 receptions for 191 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a season ending ankle injury versus USC. [8] During the 2022 season, Rex notched 22 receptions for 320 yards and six touchdowns. [9] In week two of the 2023 season, Rex caught four passes for a career high 112 yards and a touchdown in a win over Southern Utah. [10] In week 12, Rex broke the BYU tight end touchdown record as he pulled in his 23rd career touchdown on a 26 yard reception against Iowa State. [11] In the 2023 season finale, Rex hauled in three receptions for 23 yards, but fumbled in double overtime which cost the Cougars the game as they lost 40-34 against Oklahoma State. [12] During the 2023 season, Rex tallied 34 receptions for 422 yards and three touchdowns. [13]

Professional career

Rex signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent on April 27, 2024, but was waived on May 16. [14] [15]

Personal life

Rex is the son of former All-America BYU tight end, Byron Rex. He is married to former Utah Valley University volleyball star Lexi (Davies) Rex and they have one son. [16]

The Holy War is the name given to the American college football rivalry game played annually by the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and the University of Utah Utes. The Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and the University of Utah (Utah) Utes have a longstanding intercollegiate rivalry. The annual college football game is frequently referred to as the Holy War. In the 1890s, when BYU was still known as Brigham Young Academy (BYA), the two schools started competing athletically. The schools have met continually since 1909 in men's basketball, and met once a year in football from 1922 to 2013, with the exception of 1943–45 when BYU did not field a team due to World War II. Both schools formerly competed in the Mountain West Conference, but both teams left the MWC in 2011—Utah joined the Pac-12 Conference and BYU became a football independent while joining the West Coast Conference for other sports.

Gordon Lynn Hudson was an American professional football player who was a tight end in the United States Football League (USFL) and National Football League (NFL) for three seasons during the 1980s. Hudson played college football for Brigham Young University, was a two-time consensus All-American, and set the NCAA record for most career receiving yards by a tight end (2,484). He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

Dennis Gregory Pitta Jr. is an American former professional football player who was a tight end for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the BYU Cougars, earning consensus All-American honors in 2009. He was selected by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. After two strong seasons in the National Football League (NFL), Pitta suffered a hip injury in 2013 and played only occasionally until 2016, when he set a career high in receiving yards. A further injury in 2017 ended his career.

The 2013 BYU Cougars football team represented Brigham Young University in the 2013 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cougars, led by head coach Bronco Mendenhall, played their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium. This was the third year BYU competed as an independent. They finished the season 8–5. They were invited to the Fight Hunger Bowl where they lost to Washington, 31–16.

Taysom Shawn Hill is an American football utility player officially designated as a quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at BYU and joined the Saints in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. Hill was listed as a quarterback on the Saints depth chart during his first five seasons, though he took snaps at seven different positions. Hill was designated as a tight end beginning in 2022 before once again being listed as a quarterback in 2023.
