Iskra is a Slovenian company for electromechanics, telecommunications, electronics and automation.
Iskra developed from the SPRAD and a sole Kranj-based factory, a former subsidiary of the Luftfahrtgerätewerk Berlin. [1]
In 1946, Mirjan Gruden renamed Strojne tovarne Kranj to Iskra (in Slovenian: Spark). [2]
One year after it was established, Iskra developed its first switch, followed by its first FM antenna, capacitor, and then one of the key milestones in Iskra's success – the establishment of its design department. In 1962, this was the first industrial design department in Yugoslavia. [3] [4]
The bureau for railway automation, BAŽ, was founded.
In the 1970s, Iskra developed into the largest Yugoslav company for electromechanics, telecommunications, electronics and automation, [5] proving itself time and time again with exceptional industrial design in telephony, measuring instruments, and machinery. At the start of the 1990s, Iskra's logo was on all electrical devices, and the product portfolio was expanded with measuring instruments, short-wave navy radio receivers, drilling machines, movie projectors, etc.[ citation needed ]

Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, Iskra privatized in Slovenia. The company's operations in Slovenia were divided into many separate companies, including Iskratel, Iskra Avtoelektrika, Iskraemeco, Fotona, Iskra Amesi, Iskra, elektro in elektronska industrija, d.d. (Iskra d.d. for short) [7]

The Karawanks Tunnel is a motorway tunnel crossing the Alpine Karawanks mountain range between Austria and Slovenia, with a total length of 7.864 km, 8.019 km enclosure between the portals. The United States has maintained an official presence in Slovenia since the early 1970s, when the United States Information Agency (USIS) opened a library and American press and cultural center in Ljubljana. From the departure of Yousif Ghafari in January 2009 till November 2010, the U.S. Ambassador position was vacant. From November 2010 to 2015 it was held by Joseph A. Mussomeli. The Ambassador position is currently held by Jamie Harpootlian.
