The Mariko Aoki phenomenon is a Japanese expression referring to a sudden urge to defecate that is felt upon entering bookstores. The phenomenon is named after Mariko Aoki, a woman who described the effect in a magazine article published in 1985. According to Japanese social psychologist Shōzō Shibuya, the specific causes that trigger a defecation urge in bookstores are not yet clearly understood. There are also some who are skeptical about whether such a peculiar phenomenon really exists at all, and it is sometimes discussed as one type of urban myth.

Hikaru Saeki is the first female admiral of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the first female in the entire Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) to achieve star rank. Originally an obstetrician-gynecologist with the degree of M.D., Saeki joined the JMSDF in 1989. After her service in several military hospitals and medical rooms aboard naval vessels, she became the first woman to head a JSDF hospital in 1997, promoted to rear admiral in 2001, and retired in 2003.
Otaru Ankake Yakisoba is a variety of "Ankake Yakisoba" sold at many restaurants in Otaru, Hokkaido. The dish became prevalent within Otaru from the third decade of the Showa Period (1955–1964) and by the Heisei Period (1989–) was beloved by the people of Otaru. From the 2010s, in order to promote Otaru and combat the city's population decrease, a citizen's group made efforts to popularize the dish and it became known as a local delicacy.

The 2015 Ogasawara earthquake was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck offshore Japan 189 km (117 mi) west northwest of Chichi-jima in the Ogasawara Islands on May 30 at a depth of 664.0 km (412.6 mi). The shaking of the earthquake was observed almost all over Japan, as it was one of the largest deep-focus earthquakes recorded worldwide.
Mount Ōmuro is a 580 m (1,900 ft)-high cinder cone volcano in the Izu-Tobu volcano field of Itō, Shizuoka, Japan. At the independent peak, the yearly mountain burning that has been performed for more than 700 years is carried out in the early spring, so it is often covered with annual plants and is a symbol of Itō. The mountain is designated as a national natural monument and part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

On September 17, 1982, Japan Air Lines Flight 792 made an attempted landing back to its airport of origin, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, after reporting an issue in the aircraft's hydraulics soon after taking off for New Tokyo International Airport. The landing resulted in a runway excursion, which in turn led to 39 of the 124 passenger and crew being injured.
