Jagjaguwar is an American independent record label based in Bloomington, Indiana. [1]
In 1996, in Charlottesville, Virginia, University of Virginia sixth-year senior Darius Van Arman, Jagjaguwar founder, was a music director at UVA's WTJU radio station, a clerk at the Plan 9 Records store, art director at Charlottesville's C-Ville Weekly, an overnight supervisor for an adult-care facility, and booking shows at The Tokyo Rose. During this time, a friend, Adam Busch (who also would put music out on Jagjaguwar as Manishevitz), was part of a band called The Curious Digit. [4] [5] [6] The band needed a label, and Van Arman made The Curious Digit's Bombay Aloo the first release under his new Jagjaguwar label. [7] [8] The name "Jagjaguwar" was generated using a Dungeons & Dragons character name-generating computer program. [9] Shortly thereafter, Richmond band Drunk learned about Jagjaguwar and Drunk member Rick Alverson reached out to Van Arman to see if there was room for one more band on the label. [10] He booked them to play at Tokyo Rose and then signed them to the label on the spot. [11]
In 1999, Van Arman and Chris Swanson, who was part owner of the record label Secretly Canadian, became friends and soon partners. Fairly early on in those exchanges, Van Arman suggested a partnership in Jagjaguwar. [12]
Van Arman relocated to Bloomington in 1999, and Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian grew closer. Van Arman soon became a partner in Secretly Canadian, and other Secretly Canadian partners, Ben Swanson and Jonathan Cargill, joined Van Arman and Chris Swanson in a Jagjaguwar partnership. [13] [14]
In 2001, a demo from Austin, Texas-based folk band Okkervil River was sent to Chris Swanson. [15] With each Okkervil River release on Jagjaguwar—its debut Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See (2002), Down the River of Golden Dreams (2003), Sleep and Wake-Up Songs (2004) and Black Sheep Boy (2005), the band's profile grew. [16] Much of Black Sheep Boy was written at Van Arman's house in Bloomington when Will Sheff stayed with him for some months. [17] [18]
Alongside Okkervil River's releases, Jagjaguwar also released the debut album from Vancouver band Black Mountain. [19] [20] Following Black Mountain's debut, Jagjaguwar signed more artists to the label including Wilderness, The Besnard Lakes, and Sunset Rubdown. [21] [22] [23]
In 2007, Jagjaguwar signed Eau Claire, Wisconsin project Bon Iver (led by Justin Vernon), whose self-recorded album For Emma, Forever Ago (2008) had seen a grassroots groundswell based on just a handful of CD-R copies Vernon was selling at shows. [24] [25] [26] The initial pressing of For Emma, Forever Ago sold out within the first few weeks. [27] For Emma, Forever Ago received a sales certification of Gold in 2012, the same week Bon Iver's self-titled follow up album, Bon Iver , went gold. [28] [29]
Van Etten released her Jagjaguwar debut, Tramp , in 2012 and her second album, Are We There , in 2014. [30] [31] Unknown Mortal Orchestra signed to Jagjaguwar to release their sophomore album II (2013). [32] In spring 2015, they released another album, Multi-Love , which won multiple awards. [33] [34]
In 2007, Jagjaguwar's became part of the Secretly Group. [35] [36]
In 2018, Jagjaguwar was listed at number 4 on Paste magazine's top 10 record labels of 2018. [37]
Julie Elaine Doiron is a Canadian singer-songwriter of Acadian heritage. She has been the bass guitarist and co-vocalist for the Canadian indie rock band Eric's Trip since its formation in 1990. She has released ten solo albums, beginning with 1996's Broken Girl, and is also the lead singer for the band Julie and the Wrong Guys.
Okkervil River is an American rock band led by singer-songwriter Will Sheff. Formed in Austin, Texas, in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya set on the river Okkervil in Saint Petersburg. They began as a trio made up of Sheff and friends he had met in his native state of New Hampshire but, over time, have gone through many lineups.

Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See is the first full-length studio album from alternative folk-rock group, Okkervil River. Released on January 22, 2002 on the label Jagjaguwar, it contains the single, "Kansas City". Artist William Schaff, not to be confused with lead singer Will Sheff, designed the cover art. The album features an array of instruments including violin, pedal steel, mellotron, banjo, string and horn sections.
Black Sheep Boy is the third studio album by American indie rock band Okkervil River, released on April 5, 2005. The title is inspired by the song "Black Sheep Boy" by 1960s folk singer Tim Hardin. The album deals with Hardin's struggle with heroin addiction and Okkervil River lead singer Will Sheff's failed relationships and heartbreaks. The album cover features the work of Providence artist William Schaff.

The Stage Names is the fourth full-length studio album by American indie rock band Okkervil River, released on August 7, 2007. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas, with longtime Okkervil producer Brian Beattie, and with mixing from Spoon drummer and producer Jim Eno. Like other Okkervil River albums, the accompanying artwork is the work of artist William Schaff. The cover refers to a line from "Unless It's Kicks". The record was also released as a limited-edition 2-CD set that included a second disc of solo acoustic demos. A newly recorded version of "Love to a Monster", which appeared in rough demo form on the band's tour EP, Overboard and Down, was originally intended to appear on the album, but didn't make it on, and appears as a bonus track when the album is purchased through eMusic. "Shannon Wilsey on the Starry Stairs", described by lead singer and songwriter Will Sheff as "kind of a sequel to 'Savannah Smiles' and kind of a sister song to "John Allyn Smith Sails'", is included as a bonus track when the album is purchased through iTunes.

For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut studio album by American indie folk band Bon Iver. It was first self-released in July 2007, and later saw wide release on the Jagjaguwar label in February 2008. The album is principally the work of singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. While living in Raleigh, North Carolina, Vernon fell ill with mononucleosis and a liver infection, and grew frustrated with his songwriting and life. He left Raleigh and drove to his father's remote hunting cabin an hour northwest of his hometown, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, hoping to be alone.

The title comes from the term 'stand-in', a person who substitutes for the actor before filming for technical purposes. Sean Carey is an American musician from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, best known as the drummer and supporting vocalist of indie folk band Bon Iver. In August 2010, Carey released his first solo album, All We Grow, which he began working on in 2008 during hiatuses from performing with the band.

Secretly Group is a family of American independent record labels based in Bloomington, Indiana. The group is made up of Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, and Dead Oceans. Secretly Canadian, the first of the labels, was formed in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. Their first release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic. Weddle later left to form label Family Vineyard; the remaining trio were joined by Darius Van Arman, as well as his label Jagjaguwar, in 1999. The two labels had worked closely before Jagjaguwar's offices moved to Bloomington to work alongside Secretly Canadian's.
