James E. Edmondson (born March 7,1945) [1] is a justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. He was appointed to the Court's District 7 seat by Governor Brad Henry in 2003. [2]
Edmondson graduated from Central High School in Muskogee,Oklahoma,before attending Northeastern State University. [3] Following graduation from NSU in 1967,he served in the United States Navy for two years. [4] He earned his J.D. [5] degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1973. From 1976 to 1978,he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Muskogee County,Oklahoma. [6] From 1978 to 1981,he served in the U.S. Attorney's office in Muskogee,Oklahoma,as an Assistant United States Attorney,and later Acting United States Attorney. [7] From 1981 to 1983,he was a Partner in the Edmondson Law Firm along with his brother,Drew Edmondson. [8]
In 1983,Edmondson was appointed as a Judge for the 15th state Judicial District,based in Muskogee County,Oklahoma and served in that post until his appointment to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. [9]
Governor Brad Henry appointed Edmondson as an associate justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 2003,replacing the retiring Justice Hardy Summers. Edmondson was retained on the court in the 2006 election,and served as chief justice from 2009 to 2010. He was retained on the court again in the 2016 election. [10]
Edmondson was born in Kansas City,Missouri, [11] and is the son of Ed Edmondson,a former U.S. Congressman from Oklahoma,and June Edmondson,a nephew of former U.S. Senator and Oklahoma Governor J. Howard Edmondson,and the brother of former Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson.
He is married to Suzanne Rumler Edmondson and has two children. [12] His daughter Sarah Edmondson was given a 35-year prison sentence and served 12 years for her role in a crime spree,allegedly inspired by the movie Natural Born Killers,with her boyfriend which included a murder and robbery in Mississippi,and a robbery and attempted murder in Louisiana. [13] [14] Sarah Edmondson was released on parole on May 20,2010 [15] and is serving her parole in Oklahoma which is set to end on June 1,2025.

Tom Colbert is a former Associate Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. He was appointed to the Court's District 6 seat in 2004,by Governor Brad Henry,becoming the first African-American to serve on the court. On January 4,2013,he was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,and served In that post until January 2015. After completing his two-year term as Chief Justice,he resumed his previous position on the court as Associate Justice representing the 6th Judicial District. On January 19,2021,Colbert’s retirement was announced by the Oklahoma Supreme Court,effective February 1 of the same year.
Joseph M. Watt is a former Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court,who assumed the post in 1992. He was reelected in 1994,1996,and 2002. From 2003 to 2007,he served two terms as Chief Justice. In 2005,he was reelected to an unprecedented second term as Chief Justice,despite a federal age discrimination lawsuit filed by the Court's then-Vice Chief Justice Marian P. Opala,then 83 years old,who claimed Supreme Court rules were changed to prevent Opala from becoming chief justice. Justice Watt sent a letter to Governor Mary Fallin on October 2,2017,stating that he would retire from the Oklahoma Supreme Court effective December 31,2017.
James Howard Edmondson was an American politician from the U.S. state of Oklahoma. He served as the 16th governor of Oklahoma from 1959 to 1963,and the appointed United States Senator from Oklahoma from 1963 to 1964,losing to Fred R. Harris in a 1964 special election for the U.S. Senate. When he took office as Governor of Oklahoma at the age of 33,Edmondson was,and still is,the youngest governor in the history of the state.

Edward Hardy Summers (1933–2012) was a justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court from 1985 to 2003. Born in Muskogee,Oklahoma,he earned degrees in government and law at the University of Oklahoma. After graduation,he enlisted in the Judge Advocate General division of the U. S. Air Force. When he was discharged,he returned to Muskogee,where he served as Assistant County Attorney,before joining a private law firm,Fite,Robinson and Summers. In 1976,Governor David Boren appointed him District Judge for the 15th Judicial District. In 1985,Governor George Nigh appointed him to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. He served as chief justice from 1999 to 2000,and retired from the court in 2004. He died in Oklahoma City on September 12,2012.
John Kevin Stitt is an American businessman and politician serving as the 28th governor of Oklahoma since 2019. A member of the Republican Party,he was elected in 2018,defeating Democrat and former state Attorney General Drew Edmondson with 54.3% of the vote. Stitt was reelected to a second term in 2022,defeating Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister,a Republican turned Democrat,with 55.4% of the vote. A member of the Cherokee Nation,Stitt is the second governor of Native descent after former Oklahoma governor Johnston Murray.
Thomas H. Owen (1873–1938) was a judge of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. He born in Arkansas,where he grew to manhood,and came to Indian Territory in 1894. According to Victor Harlow's version of Owen's biography,Owen was born near Jasper,Arkansas on February 24,1873.
E. Summers Hardy (1933–2012) was an associate justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court from 1917 to 1919. He should not be confused with the similarly named justice,Hardy T. Summers,who served on the Oklahoma Court from 1985 to 2003.
